New MI member- Laser Hair Removal
Hi Everyone my name is Doris I read some of the posts on the "results" people had with laser hair removal and I thought I could share some info.
Laser hair removal is a great service for removing unwanted hair (if done properly). Being in Michigan we've heard our share of stories and I won't mention which companies but it's more common that we would like.
Many different factors come into play when trying to remove hair with a laser. Results can depend on, the type of laser being used, the manufacturer, the estheticians technique, the equipment settings, and so on.
The way it works is by targeting the melanin in the hair follicle. When the hair is shaved, the laser picks up the contrast between the tiny dark dots where the hair is, and the lighter surrounding skin. The melanin absorbs the laser energy and takes it all the way down to the hair bulb and basically "pops" it. The hair is only attached to the hair bulb when actively growing. In the other phases it actually separates slightly and creates a little gap. In this case the laser energy can't make it all the way to the bulb. Since only 15%-20% of your hair is actively growing at any given time, that creates the need for multiple treatments.
So why didn't my treatments work?
I have been around this industry for some time but the first I ever heard of this reason I will share with you, was when I started working for During a training with a Dr. from Nashville, he explained that being too conservative with laser settings is almost as bad as being too aggressive. The reason why is typically your first few treatments the hair is going to be very course and capable of attracting the laser energy. If the treatment is too conservative what will happen in fact is the hair won't be disabled, just will become thinner and finer. Now if that happens each treatment, over all you may notice a slight reduction but you won't see results you expected.
During treatments a good esthetician will adjust the joules throughout the treatment sometimes raising or lowering 1 or 2 joules depending on the reaction of the skin. Adverse reactions if any can be greatly reduced just by simply cooling the area a little longer with a cool pack or just a wet towel.
I apologize for such a long post but just wanted to offer some information. If anyone has any questions regarding laser hair removal or any other cosmetic services in general, please feel free to send me a PM. Even if you're in another state I will be more than happy to answer questions.
