me too...i'd like to lose some weight and tone up at the same time. i found some dance studios in my area, but i was wondering if it would be beneficial to invest in an instructional video before joining a class. two videos that i am interested in are Discover Bellydance - Basic Dance
    and
Belly Dancing Workout - bellydancing for fitness

Belly dance is a translation of the french "danse du ventre" which was applied to the dance in the Victorian period. It is something of a misnomer as every part of the body is involved in the dance; the most featured body part usually being the hips.
This is like an exercise and full boby movement.I really like this dance.

    Default Belly Dancing.

What do you think about it ?
I've personally been fascinated by it since I was 10 years old.
Practicing in front of a mirror, mocking Shakira videos. lol I still do that!
Finally next year I can take classes!! I'm excited, it's a really feminin form of dance!

I have been Belly dancing and taking intensive lessons for about 6 years now. When you take your lessons make sure it is from an accredited instructor as there is more to the dance than just standing shaking your body and hips. It is a dance that maximizes muscle control throughout the body, and isolates one set of muscles and movements from a second set of muscles and movement and it is a dance that has spiritual aspects to it. It is a dance that traditionally was by women for women and only the "glamourized "cabaret" style is a recent innovation.
Having said that, it is and can be a total body workout, incorporating aspects of muscle toning and cardio workouts. It can be sensual.

Yeah, I'm excited to learn to use different muscles. By myself I learned to isolated my stomach muscles, top and bottom. I don't know how many people already could of done that, but I sure am proud! So now I'm doing belly roles every so often lol
