Have you tried googling it? Maybe someone has tried it before haha, you may need a thicker/stronger needle...what size are you using now?? If it's a standard 11/14, you may want to get a stronger one![]()
Hello all
As you might or might not know i love to sew and i managed to get hold of some pvc fabric (e.g. catwoman outfit)
Only thing is i have never used this kind of fabric before and my machine doesnt seem to like it...
could be the tensions or the needle im not sure?
any tips in general about sewing pvc?
Cheers,
Saint-

I had a look at a few videos on youtube that have good tips but it doesnt actually indicate the correct tension... whenever i sew it gets a few cm's then stops and the bobbin thread has been pulled up with three thread pieces instead of one... hmmmm

I'm not familiar with the specific fabric but I'll take a guess that it is very stretchy and "needle resistant"? I've sewn some pretty tough spandex type fabircs.
I only ever use Schmetz needles, you'll want ball point, probably a size 90.
Practice on some scraps, if you have a serger it should be pretty easy but you may need to use some tissue paper (like used in gift wrapping) under the fabric to keep it from catching on the feed dog teeth.
If you are working with a straight stitch machine, try stretching the fabric as you sew. That means you will have to grip the fabric from behind the needle and in front of it so the there is no pulling in the needle itself. This technique used to be referred to as stretch and sew. You may be able to find some info on it on line. There used to be stores that taught and sold patterns for this method.
For either type machine you will probably have to toy with the tension to find what works best.

i switched the bobbin and it seems to be working ok now... also pvc is like plastic... so im technically sewing plastic not stretchy at all.. im thinking i might need a denim needle
I tried one of the tips they had on youtube... just for interest sake... to keep the material from catching the footer put some sort of lubricant on the fabric to stop this from happening.... of course you can buy specific lubricant from a fabric store just i just used vitamin e cream :P cant hurt it seen as it is essentially only plastic

You might try sewing machine oil, then if it drips into the machine it won't gum it up. A layer of tissue paper may do the trick with that, or try dropping the feed dogs and loosening the tension on the pressure foot.
Try a leather needle, they have an angled point and will probably pierce the plastic better than a regular needle.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if you learned how to do it, if so how was the material to wear? I found a costume I would like to wear for Halloween and it was made from pvc.
