Cool Pottery

Does anyone know anything about pottery? I saw a video of a man throwing a pot on youtube and it was absolutely amazing!! I don't care if I don't know how to do it but I'd like to know if there is anyone else here who would making or watching someone make pottery. My fiance used to make pots back in his high school and they are beautiful!! So I was looking to see if I could get some help on anything about pottery.

Mainly I was thinking about the scene in the beginning of the movie Ghost with the pots and stuff. I think it's a cute scene and I always envision my fiance and myself in that scene. Strange, I know, but I would like some info on pottery because I love pots. Thanks a bunch!

Pottery is a great hobby to get into. Throwing wheels aren't that cheap, for the good kind, but you can always get a bag of white clay to hand build a sculpture. There are several types to: some clay requires to be baked by a kiln, others air dry, and some never completely harden if moistened regularly and is properly stored. Any art store should carry some sort, if not, check online. Even start out with some Play-Doh and make sure you like it.

One of my favorite things to make, and easy is:

Either ball up a piece of clay (or roll it flat out and conform it around the ball of newspaper, smoothing out the seams), let it harden a little, say for an hour, then carve out the inside from the 'bottom'. Stuff with newspaper and carve design all the way through to the newspaper. Harden all the way, paint or glaze, remove newspaper and you have a votive candle holder.

Yeah I do like playing with clay. It sounds like a lot of fun to make a votive candle holder!

I have looked into getting a potter's wheel or a kickwheel because my fiance just loves to throw pots and I'm trying to get one for him. ^_^ So I'm going to do more research on pottery! Thanks a lot Franny&Zooey!!!
