Put your dish sponge and kitchen dish scrubbies in the dishwasher, the heat sterilizes them to make them sanitary for a little longer.

The harsh dtergents coupled with the high heat of the diswasher can cause a "sponge", I assume you mean the cellulose man made sponges that are usually rectangular in shape and come in all sorts of colors? to deteriorate quickly.

The microwave for a minute suggestion when your sponge is damp is probably best as the internal temp will get high enough to kill everything.

You can also throw several of them in the washing machine. Standing them up on end to dry instead of laying them flat on a big side helps also as more air is able to circulate around and through the sponge.

All this thought/theory for something that costs less than 25 cents each (imported from china at your local dollar store).

    The joys of being frugal....

Sponges are filthy harbingers of bacteria, fungi, and other nasties. The best thing to use is a scrub brush made of plastic (Bed Bath & Beyond has a nice one with replaceable brush parts). You can chuck it in the washer which will kill off about 99% of anything on it and keep it from smelling gross or spreading illness. My future mother in law uses sponges until they literally start to disintegrate and they make all the dishes smell like mildew. Oh God... it's terrible...

What good is a wiener dog if he's not spoiled rotten?
