Default Planted shamrocks but what the!?

I planted some shamrock bulbs on Sunday in my ceramic pot. The pot is filled with good well draining potting soil, and the pot drains well from the bottom. I noticed around mid week some little white things coming out of the soil that looked like mushrooms. I ignored. Today I look out there and one of them has grown into this weird formation. I look closer and NOTHING about these look like shamrocks. I took brushed back the top layer of soil and underneath the top layer of soil there are LOTS of these little white mushroom looking things. :\ I only planted about 8 shamrock bulbs. What gives? I've never had mushrooms take over a ceramic pot before. Anyone know what this is? (Wild Child!!?!)

Well, I decided to go look into the bag of potting soil I bought and sure enough, it was FULL of mushrooms. EEEK! I guess this means I'll have to dump my pot of shamrocks and maybe I'll be lucky enough to find the bulbs, but I seriously doubt it. Darn FUNGI!

What brand of potting soil was it? Miracle Gro is notoriously BAD for being full of insects and junk. Your best bet is actually the cheapo stuff. There's something you can do to sterilize it, so to speak, but as I am the black thumb of the family, I wouldn't know what it is :/ I'll ask hubby and get back to you!

I thought the same thing, so I bought a 40 lb bag of the cheap stuff. It was like 3 bucks or something like that. I thought it smelled funny when I opened it...but hey, I'm not a professional soil sniffer so who am I to judge. When I looked in the bag this morning and saw it growing full of these creepy looking shrooms, I did the whole dramatic gasp and jump backwards like they were going to eat me.

I don't think there's any way my shamrock bulbs will survive this. I guess I shall start over!

Spread it out in the sunlight some place. A few days of drying out and baking in the sun should do it. You can bake it in the oven but that will kill the good stuff too.
