I know some seeds benifit from being soaked for 2-24 hours before sowing. Some seeds will also sprout sooner.
Do you guys know if this could apply to most seeds? I am working on a veggie garden and some seeds take forever to sprout. Have any of you guys soaked seeds before planting them? |

It's so much fun planting and watching things grow. One of my hobbies i must admit.. First you have to ensure that where you plant them achieves the right amount of sun light for that particular " veg" plant, some love afternoon sun, some morning for instance... South and North facing. Sure, anything that naturally sprouts as it is getting old, is great to place in a small dish with cotton wool and keep water soaked, then plant. But seeds in general, work just fine straight into the dirt with water and cover over, keep watering for a week daily and it will do the same thing. Have fun. CW

Well I've done a veg garden before i find it helpful to put the seeds in little seed pots and keep them indoor where they get plenty of sun. one they sprout than you can put them out side. I find that if you plant them out side first the birds tend to eat all your seeds and than you can feel like a failure. but as for soaking i never tried

It's not a bad idea to leave the seeds in wet cotton wool until they germinate, it's a higher success rate and then you know which seeds will live, rather than guessing.
Gee, I wonder where I learnt that. |

It was great experimenting with those things at school. I am curious though... Did you really "guess" how many seeds will live?

I did grow stuff at school, but that's not what I was talking about
.And yes, if you don't see it germinate, then you are left guessing as to whether or not it will grow... Whether you'll have a baby skunk plant to look after or not... |

With veggie plants, I have always noticed that soaking them for 24 hours, works, because you can see if a seed is a "dud"....usually seeds that wont germinate will float at the top of the water you put them in.The water also gives them a great head start!!
I like to start my veg. inside. in small peat pots, with special soil for seedlings, and veggies...Dill is the EASIEST thing to grow...ever. I dont soak those seeds...I just throw them in a hole in the ground...lol. Most seed packages will have the instrutions for sewing....like my peas say "Soak before planting", as do my morning glories... |
