Internet dating "can" work OregonGirl Especially, when your not on a dating site, looking, it just finds you.....

You both had something in common and then found you had even more in common, and you both acted out as someone else, and that was your inner child, so you both were able to also see different sides of each other, which made things interesting, now you obviously know each other very well on all levels

I met a previous boyfriend from a Forum...America - to Australia it can happen:P I met my fiance by chance, dining at his restaurant when I wasn't looking....I bet you weren't looking

    Not true of all men.

I think that the social element is more of a factor than you think.
Facebook and Twitter are equally as a big a waste of time and relationships and these are more utilised by Females.
US women now outnumber men on Facebook 1.35 to 1 ( 2009).

Of course Facebook has its benefits but it also allows people to escape form their lives and waste a lot of time.

I'd assume this is true because women, on average, enjoy to be looked at, to upload photos in this or that dress, at this or that party, with this or that new guy (not my thing at all, but that's a different subject). It satisfies the need of such women to be admired like the XYZ star on the magazine, the newspaper, the TV and so on, especially when they aren't admired by their partner/don't have one and even more so when they are stormed with Photoshoped XYZ "hot stars". In a similar way that porn is an escape from reality and a waste of time (and some times money).

I've never liked any kind of online social networking, I've never liked their layouts or the way they 'force' young people to be 'popular' with 500+ "friends", but unfortunately, that's how we chose to use technology: As a means to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world and become as less dependent on others as possible.

Of course such places have advantages and they are almost impossible to avoid, but many of us don't realize how important privacy is in our lives. Instead, we rush to publish everything we do on Facebook and we actually feel good about it, since somebody actually cares (or so we imagine) and will start a discussion about the ice-cream we're just having. We may be living alone, maybe our friends are too busy to come by, we may feel lonely, but hey, somebody from the other side of the world talks about us on the internet. It can only be a good thing... right?

    Ooooh, I don't know

Boys with their toys, comes to mind..The excitement still of travel and going on the rollercoaster, or down a water slide, that new car, or motorbike, taking them back to their youth....

Much like we let our inner child come out to play, the cheeky side, the little girl...

I think the child remains in all of us...

Facebook, has it's merits, I get to see what my cousins, Aunt and "sister" are up to and that they are allright.I certainly don't get active in it, but I agree with stressed, it's a communication, via the internet, interacting with people when you are feeling down, or happy, especially because you can express how you feel in one sentence and often receive support or laughter which helps your day...

Nothing is a waste of time, in my opinion if you enjoy it...or need it... It's just sad that computers can sometimes, take over more important things in life, the simple things in life, even smelling the roses, .......

I am sure that the OPs man agrees with you and thinks that he is not wasting his life as he is enjoying himself.

A lot of time is spent twittering on facebook. I have watched people face booking on their mobile at their own party. A sad state of affairs.

I have also had to regulate my children from WOW. I think it is an extreme distraction from life.
Surely it is a matter of maturity and self control- Unfortunately some people do not have enough- but it is not just men.

Remember when we were kids? And, our parents? It was climbing trees, visiting neighbours, playing ball, there was no computer

Me too and I am only 22. I grew up with hide and seek and hitting golf balls in the soccer field. Then the computer games came, and now reality. Reality is, the past is definitely the past and will never ever be back. High tech and lethargy is the name of the game now.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.
