Awww, thats so sad. Um silly (ish) question, but how do you know that she wasnt doing this before? I mean, youre not actually in the house? Or is she crying as soon as you shut the door behind you?

Umm, try giving her something to keep her occupied, like soft toys and chews. Dogs will cry when theyre bored or not having as much exercise as they need... but with older dogs, that could be an entirely different story.. maybe she is in pain? I would ask your vet.

On the otherhand, if it is a boredom thing... chews, long walks.. dont give in to her crying...if you open the door and tell her to shhhh then thats only giving her attention and she will expect you to come back every time she cries. It is hard. Try shutting her in another room whilst youre in the house for 5 minutes and gradually increase the time?

    Good luck.

ive never heard or seen her do this before...she barely lets me leave the house and she tries to get out the door to follow me wherever i go. When i shut the door she will start screeching and crying and scratching at the door but when i come back shes perfectly fine...so mayb i should take her to the vet?

she's lonely! we had 2 dogs and when we left it was ok as they kept each other company. the 15 year old terrier passed and the 2 year got very very lonely and would cry & whimper. got another goldie (a cousin of the 2 year old) and now they dont wine or whimper. still wanna go with us though.

I agree, get her a play mate. She has lived a lot of years by herself and you were probably around more before, now she is at a stage where she is bored and can't and doesn't want to be alone.

Take her for more walks, even if it's to the end of the street and back and give her more attention.

When it's time for you to go, give her a smacko or something and tell her she is good, point to her bed or place her on it with the smacko... Reward her for going back to her old pattern.

But, if you can get her a 2 year old, not a puppy, small dog, I would do that.

    Just a thought...

Has something changed in her immediate environment...

Would something "scare" her when you are gone?

    Ex: Different noises, new neighbours...

Did "something" happen when you were gone... Maybe someone scared her while you were away?...

Definately, a trip to the vet would be a start...

Those are times I wish dogs could talk...

Your pet is definately trying to tell you something...

I hope for the best for both of you...

my spaniel does have a playmate..i also have a 3 year old boxer..the only thing different that i can think of is i bought her a new bed...perhaps there is something wrong with the bed lol..everyone keeps tellin me its because shes old and dying, that might be the reason but i dont really want to hear that

Then I bet the boxer is not that old into the household. Instead of feeling like it's a friend, she feels like it is a folly.

    Jealousy.

The boxer needs to know that the Spaniel is the boss... The Spaniel may feel that it is getting old and you are replacing.

I have a 13 year old Pomeranian, "mummy's girl" and a 7 year old Wolf Dog, 'Husky" I told Kia ( "Husky" ) from day dot, she was 17 months old, "Missy is the boss" being the Pom.

Kia and i have an amazing relationship, smart gir she truly is.. But she understands Missy was "first" and so, she is the boss., but sadly i make Kia feel the boss and Missy needs more attention as a result, personalities, they both love but Kia does her little cutness, and makes it hard for me.. Does everything right, right down to sitting outside and not walking unless I say "WALK", she will sit in the front yard and view, Missy will walk across the road and get run over.

Your dog is crying cause she thinks another one has taken over, probably the 3 year old is fisty and you laugh at it, give it that tad more attention not meaning to..

Your little one needs to know IT'S THE BOSS, your 3 year old needs to be told "YOUU LITTLE ONE IS THE BOSS"

Once established, your dog " is not old" at all, will see that she is still the priority.
