Got to watch those situations with an ex. Could you invite her do something special with you before and make plans for a day or two later? I have a feeling this may lead to a bit of misery, first because you are expecting him to do something to make you unhappy and second because you are planning to essentially have someone play 'bf'.
This is all headtripping. Now I now this is my personal belief but for what it's worth: Significant events such as a holiday which is a date of change, which the new year is (so are Bdays) should be spent in a way the reflects what you want for the coming year. Spending it playing defensive mind games isn't healthy for you. It doesn't signify a good start to your year. Do something that will be fun with no looking over your shoulder. Checking out the ex's reaction or putting yourself in a situation where a few drinks too many and you may be playing more with Mr for hire bf than you intended. While getting laid may do you a world of good, it should be with intension and awareness. Not a default, not revenge and not involving someone else who may not really know the score.
Of course you have to do what is best for you.

TODAY WORK SUCKED MONKEY NIPPLES....My boss was a complete furry tuna taco and I wanted to just...spit on her. My co-worker likes to freaking pick on me..and I was ready to THROW STUFF and quit. Like...I try my HARDEST, and it feels like it isn't enough....

I know you promised your pal you would go, but being at a party with a ex present is fraught with problems. If you are going to go, I think you should have a date.
Being there by yourself will only make you feel worse and think "why is he having so much fun and here I am alone..."
Best option would be to have a date and go to a completely different party. Or if your friend is the one throwing it, she should un-invite your ex.
I wish she could un-invite him...but we all went to school together...but whatever...I'll go, either with a date, or without....i'll deal with it.
