CW, this is so sad and all the world has been watching in sorrow. In my state we experience wild fires every year, but never with the deaths and property loss this has had. Earth based housing such as rammed earth or plastered staw bale would withstand this or even earth bermed concrete. Building systems such as metal studs cannot withstand the high heat.
We often see devistation in coastal areas from hurricanes and they rebuild in the same places with the same materials. I don't understand it. We see it in the central US with tornados, every year people die (part of my own state is in the tornado alley). They keep allowing the most dangerous structures - mobile homes. My kids schools before we moved had these 'temporary' (they never moved them once they brought them) classrooms in a high risk area, many of the regular structures lack any underground safety area too. It makes no sense. It is as if as a society we are agreeing that the higher initial cost isn't worth preventing tragedy.
