Hydrogen has some real challenges but it doesn't have to be produced utilizing coal or fossil fuels. Electric vehicles have problems to, unless the electricity is produced by some other means, it's just moving the polution source and in my state that mostly means coal burning.

Hydrogen acts like batteries - it is a way to store and transport energy, but it isn't a way to produce energy. So far hydrogen is more expensive and less efficient than batteries so I don't see it as being useful for anything.
