I have a 3yo black lab who has a thing for cat poop. Not dog poop, or bird poop, or any other kind, just cat poop. Has anyone ever had to deal with this? I've heard from friends that it is fairly common, but no one has a solution..
How do I get the ed dog to stay out of the litter box? I clean the box almost every day so it is not like he's got a smorgasbord there and he is given plenty of food and toys to keep him occupied. He is good when I am home, but when I leave for work, he's right in the litter box again. I've been keeping him outside in his outdoor kennel during the day while I am away, which obviously stops him since he isn't in the house... but I live in WI, and the winters here can be pretty nasty. I don't want him to have to be outside all day in the terrible cold - I would rather just fix the problem at the source (ie get him to quit eating ). I have been told that putting cayenne pepper on the poo will stop dogs from trying to eat it, but I have also been told that cats hate the smell too and will stop using their litter box - a second problem I do NOT want to face. Any ideas???

If you can catch him in the act, a light smack on the snout over a couple times should do the trick.
I'm not an advocate of cruelty in any form, but this method works.

I had been doing the smacking thing, just a swat at on his hind end or his head, which is why he is now really good when I am home. You would think he didn't care at all about it...
but then I leave, he's in the house alone, and I come home to find he's been poop-surfing again! Grrrrrrrr! It makes me more mad since he knows he's not supposed to do it at all and waits for me to leave before "snacking" ...sneaky dog!

There is a spray or something that for dogs works. Basically you spray it on their food and it makes their poop taste like crp, well, I guess more than it already does. I'm not sure if it would work for the whole cat thing though.
Go to the Foster and Smith website. I think that is where I saw it.

Ain't that the truth... it just seems crazy that anyone would have to put stuff in food to make poop taste BAD. Really? Like it doesn't taste bad enough on its own? ![]() I'll have to look into that stuff. I'd really just like the get the behavior under wraps.. I wonder if I did feed the kitties that stuff for a while that the dog would just stop and never? Or would he start back up again if I stopped buying it for the cats? I'd like not to have to buy something for the next 15 years if I can just get the dang dog to S-T-O-P. ......easier said than done, I know!
