Isn't the states still the only place without universal health care? I never understood why they do not have a system like Canada or the UK has. Want to see an interesting and shake your head type movie?...rent Sicko by good ol' Michael Moore. I am glad I do not have to deal with that.

That's a particularly flawed argument without knowing what my tax bills have been.

45% of this country pays NO federal income tax.

The wealthiest 1 percent of this country pay almost 40% of the tax bill. The top 5% pay almost 60%.

But it's time for this segment to "pay their fair share"?

    Shameful.

All because some people say they can't "afford" to buy health insurance. But they're perfectly fine carrying an Iphone with a $150/m plan, and a coach purse on their arm.

    What a travesty.

    Apologies!

All because some people say they can't "afford" to buy health insurance. But they're perfectly fine carrying an Iphone with a $150/m plan, and a closet full of Ed Hardy T-Shirts.

The simple fact of the matter is if I get really sick I will probably die due to lack of coverage. Statistically that is what happens.
I have life insurance and my kids will be better of financially if I die than with me living. I have worked my fanny off most of my life and had coverage most of my life, but since having kids I made the choice to actually raise them myself, dispite the results of poor relationship choices. I think I've done pretty well with them. I don't regret that choice. I am now at the age when I am less hireable for the kind of jobs that have benefits, my education/job skills are outdated for those kind of jobs. That's life.

I've been stripped of everything I had more than once by a man. That's life too. Right now about the only assets I have to my name are my health and my kids. I do not plan to ever have them support me. If my health goes I will go on my own terms.

Blame the insurance companies for being inaccessible by those whose jobs don't carry insurance.
Blame the companies who don't extend health insurance plans (fully, partially, or not at all paid by the company) for making it impossible for those with good jobs to get insurance.
Blame the health care industry, who charges $6000 to the uninsured for an emergency room visit and won't allow them to see a regular doctor without pre-paying.
Blame society for being intrinsically socialistic ... if you don't want to pay for somebody else's well-being, you should get yourself a private island and expatriate.
But when you go around blaming people whose circumstances you don't know, you're setting yourself up for a fail. Judging trashy people for being trashy people (cashier at Wendy's, if you didn't get your nails newly done every week, what could you do ...) doesn't do any good - why? Because you're telling them how to spend their money, instead of telling the government how to spend yours.
Of course rich people pay more taxes. They spend more money (that means more sales tax spent out) and even if they have different percentages to pay, 20% of $20,000/yr is going to be much smaller than 10% of $100,000 ... why is the person making $100,000 getting a break? Are they better than the person making $20k/yr?

    I guess they must be.

I am an independent consultant and I pay my own health insurance out of pocket. I bought my policy online at a website that compared several carriers and plans based on my underwriting results.

Little - your employer owes you nothing but a paycheck. Everything else, is what they call "benefits." If you dont' like your benefits package, you are free to purchase your own insurance directly from a carrier, or you can find a job that will subsidize your insurance premiums in the form of a benefits package.

That's a false statement. It's illegal in this country to turn away a patient based on their ability to pay. That's why we all pay medicare taxes.

We should blame society. For failing to eat right, for failing to quit smoking, for failing to exercise, for failing to not wear helmets with their motorcycles.
For failing to buy health insurance when they could afford it, but would rather someone else foot the bill. Where is the self responsibility? Why should others subsidize people's poor choices?

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. The U.S. has a graduated tax scale. Therefore, you are taxed at an increasingly higher rate as you make more money. Folks making more money DO NOT get a break at all. As I showed above, they pay the majority of federal income taxes. My breakdown had nothing to do with sales tax.

Lordy, I am glad I live in Australia.

We do have Medicare and we can be admitted to a public hospital and it covers some of it but we will always be admitted in an emergency without fail. Our Doctors are medicare, bulk billing so they don't send us off here and there.

I have life insurance, income protection, health insurance, contents insurance but then I was an Insurance Sales Person many years ago and I realise that it's important regardless.. And, if you own a business then the bank owns you here, so you have no choice but to have life and income protection and the premiums suck big time, almost a Mortgage on a $200k house...

What is sad is two people have to work to survive, one wage only covers a Mortgage or rent and utilities, then there's food, insurances, clothes etc...

No wonder there is so much heartache, stress and thefts in this World.
Do we not realise that in order to find a soul
    It doesn't happen over night
if truth were to be told.

Like everything in life that's hard to achieve
    you must believe!

I think its true for medical emergencies. If you show up at an emergency room they will treat you (after a many hour wait), and then raise the prices for everyone else. Still a bad system.
