Don't know what to call this, I've done it for years and would like to invite others here to try it and share the results.
There are two forms of this I have done. I should do it more because it works.

    Here is what you do:

Get ready for sleep. Floss and brush, do whatever you do.
Consciously calm yourself. I like to write in my journal with this.
Have something you need an answer to or solution for. Have a conversation with your subconscious. I say it out loud," Ok, subconscious, I need to figure how to do {whatever you have}. I want you work on it while I'm sleeping and give me the answer in the morning".
Don't get carried away a whole to do list. Just one thing. Typically I find that within a short time of waking, the answer just comes to me. I just know what I need to do. I always say thank you and great job!

The other form, which I've done less and am currently more interested in, is specific to dreaming.
Again, prepare for sleep. This time tell yourself what to dream about. Not in detail but generally. I've done this, many times.
    Give it a try.

What I'm trying to do as the next level is dreaming a reality. This involves specifying to myself that I will dream about what I need most (not saying what- let my subconscious determine that) and dream of how I will get it. So, for example, if my subconscious has me dream of having plenty of money to live a really comfortable, secure life, I would not only dream of what that would be like but of how I would achieve it.

I think for most people it would be easiest to take this in stages. But anyone up for giving it a whirl?

Oh I almost cannot believe that there's someone outside the dreaming forum that I used to visit religiously over the years who does this as well...!

Have you tried something called "lucid dreaming?" Every once in a while we have dreams where we actually realize that we're dreaming... And there are techniques that can help increase the frequency of those times. Lucid dreaming can be so helpful for a number of things... I'd recommend the book "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by LaBerge.

Say you're nervous about an upcoming speech in front of people, well, you can have a lucid dream and practice doing just that, building up your confidence. Say there's a loved one who you want to speak to but can't for some reason in real life, well you can satisfy that urge in a lucid dream.

Sometimes when people talk about lucid dreams, it comes off as new-age garbage... But it's really very basic.

I do something like that in a waking state. I can visualise it and run through it all in my mind.

I had no idea there were sites for this. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

If you want to check one out, google "mortal mist." It's the first link. It's filled with very intelligent, kind, helpful people (not unlike WH! ), and there are tons of cool topics and activities to explore.

    WC,

i've tried the first bit, but i find all i end up doing is staying up all night, or waking up over and over just thinking about it, instead of it just coming to me.

Its interesting. I find that if I'm clear but not overly focused I get a better result. Like Sperosi, if I put too much thought in it, I just end up worrying it to death. But if I just say, ok I need a solution, work on it and then let it go - it comes. For most of what we deal with in life, we have the answers either in ourselves or through collective thought but we have to tap into it and trust it.

Don't know why I don't do this more.

That's exactly what I did. Thought about it and wrote in my journal just before sleeping. Slept really good. Then woke up with totally random thoughts in my head. Then it dawned on me that I had done that before I went to sleep and it all clicked. I think it would not have worked if I had dwelled on it, but I totally forgot and it left my mind completely.

I even thought to myself when I woke up. "why in the world am I thinking about that? ....oh!"
