Easiest thing to do is ask the neighbors.

May be able to get a better rate is they're doing more than one house in the neighborhood.

    Agree with pretzel..

Don't know where you are but in my part of the country being able to communicate with them is a biggie. I haven't had a choice, the management contracts as company to do the yards and snow plowing. Most of the men who show up don't understand one word in 10 of English and trying to explain anything - like don't push a running mower across my entry mats, is an exersize in frustration. (They've destroyed 6 of them and those big ones are pricey)

Find out what services they are qualified to do and the rates. Do you want them to do things like areate, trim shrubs and trees - are they actually qualified to do these things? Or did they walk off the street and get handed a chain saw? If they fertilize do you have a choice in the products used, such as all organic?

Do you have a water company? Our water company here has a listing of recommended and certified landscapers and lawn maintenance companies. But I also live in the desert, so if we use 'water smart' certified companies, we get discounts on our water bill.

I also second the asking neighbors.

The reason for my post was to get ideas on the best way to advertise to catch the interest of new customers. I currently own a lawn care business that will be in our 3rd year of business this season. Our first year we advertised in the newspaper part of the season and got our start of customers who continued with us last season as well as a few new customers by word of mouth. Last season we didn't pay for any advertising at all. This year we want to grow and looking for the most productive way to advertise that will catch everyone's eye. We know that word of mouth is the best advertising and we believe that our current customers will gladly recommend us as we have great relationship with all our customers and communicate with them often.

Our business is just my wife and myself. Occasionally my son comes out to help me. With just us handling all aspects of the business we are the ones that the customers deal with when calling and we are the ones who tend to their properties so there is no miscommunications

Well that's a horse of a different color from the OP

Actually, I think even now, rely on your existing customers. Flyers in the neighborhoods that you currently do business in would be a start. Public Access TV would also be a possibility since ad rates wouldn't be overwhelming. Obviously a web page you could list on any other ads would be a bonus.

Problem with flyers in neighborhoods is that alot of the communities around here have those "no solicitation" signs as you enter the area so can't do the door to door flyers in those areas. I plan to do some door to door flyers in my neighborhood and a few others. Not sure of the best way to approach the "no solicitation" areas.

Flyers in mailboxes or doorways may or may not qualify as solicitations. You're not necessarily soliciting donations but business. Most neighborhoods generally turn a blind eye and in my guess police would only ask you to leave. It would depend on the neighborhood and whether the people who live in them are pricks or not.

I'd do it anyway. You could do it rather quickly and without fanfare. Most people wouldn't even know you were there. And if someone asks, tell them you do so and so's landscaping and you're advertising your services to his neighbors.

    Why not.

Good point. I live in a new development, so we get bombarded with fliers on our door for everything, pools, landscaping, pest control, home security, etc. I work from home and never have any clue that I've been left 3-4 fliers every morning.
