As a cancer sufferer/survivor I've read that drinking breast milk may help. Anybody out there want to sell a 'pint a day'! Trouble is I live in Dublin in the Land of Saints and Scholars, -not really the done thing here. Help please!

Congratulations imstillstanding, that's fantastic news and we wish you continued success.

Actually, I have heard the same, regarding breast milk, I've moved your thread to the Lounge as it really hasn't got anything to do with sex.

But, I am sure if you keep your stress under wraps, continue to be positive, eat healthily then your giving your body a very good life.

    Welcome to the Forum.

Since you are in remission ( cause you said "survivor") what are you exactly helping?

I would love to see an actual study that says it has a benefit (pseudoscience has zero merit), and a woman who is okay with selling her milk to a total stranger.

I often read on craigslist and such men seeking lactating women for sexual fantasy purposes, have read on this forum and adult nursing relationships between couples where the women nurses their mate... and have heard of milkmaid brothels where women sell the nursing experience and/or milk to patrons ... but this is the first I've ever heard of possible benefits of it for cancer surviors (congratulations on that).

I wonder if baby formula would make for a substitute since its a good enough substitute to sustain infants?

I've read that mother's milk contains a large number of antibodies that are beneficial to the baby and that babies given formula don't get them. Sustaining is not the key, but rather to get a baby to thrive. Maybe some of the antibodies have anti-cancer properties. The antibodies could be species specific, at least in part.

It was on House MD. I don't know of its real merits.
And you can find just about anything for sale on the internet. Even in Ireland. People are weird like that.

I heard this some time back. If it won't hurt you and might help, why not? There are women who sell breast milk for a variety purposes. It isn't legal in many places. In my state it can be provided to hospitals for infants but selling bodily fluids isn't legal. There are organizations which promote the use of breast milk but they are often underground. You would want to sure that the provider was "clean".

The stuff in breast milk is remarkably beneficial to newborns and young children and absolutely plays a role in immunity and other health benefits...but cancer prevention? I don't see it. These ideas comes from the underground just like you say WC and a good majority of the time they are the groups that are in complete fear of anything to do with medical treatment so they resort to promoting natural remedies claiming that 'natural' means better-obviously not always the case.

The way I think of it is if science already knows that breast milk is basically essential for infant development then why would they have not already done research for other potential benefits? If I was to grasp at straws then maybe someone could say there is somehow a relationship between vitamin D in breast milk and cancer but even that is way too broad to make any sort of assumption. As far as I know there is no documented proof saying "yeah breast milk is now a potential cancer treatment based on this data". Maybe a researcher in the future is going to find some magical compound...who knows lol. But personally I have very little faith in this being an actual cancer prevention method when there are countless other compounds out there that actually have been proven to do stuff...there are some natural compounds that have the potential for being very beneficial. Plus drinking someone else's breast milk?...eww.

The problem with "if it won't hurt, why not" is that there are a lot of unscrupulous people who will take advantage of desperate dying patients and sell them all sorts of fake cures.

In this case it is probably harmless - but very unlikely to work. Cancer is run-away growing cells, and most treatments involve chemicals or radiation to kill rapidly growing cells. Milk is designed to feed fast growing cells.

Definately agree on the scam possibilities,

The flip side may be that if there are nutrients and certain anti-bodies inherent to mothers milk that could cause normal cells to grow at a rate on par with or even quicker than cancer cells, it's possible that this could slow the rate of growth of cancer cells.
