We have a new government here in the UK. Why do people automatically assume that it will not work and end in acrimony?

Not speaking about this specifically (I'm not in the UK), but I think there are a lot of people that are resistant to change. Some people automatically think that change is bad and any changes made, will fail. It's the fear of the unknown and being pulled out of their comfort zone. In my experience, even people that don't like they way things are presently ran and want change, fear it too.

Maybe I'm just too used to the endless cat fight that is American politics, but coalition implies that there has to be cooperation, and that's not something you see too often between political parties.

I think both Tex and Lana are right. We tend to be distrustful of politicians as it is and it really is true that some times those who complain the most about things, resist change the most.

Politicians so often talk about making major changes to the political landscape but don't continue with business as usual, that many people have become very skeptical. When we start seeing real action rather than talk I think a lot of people will change their opinions.

all governments are dysfunctional in one way or another. But I have to ask, can anyone show an example of a coalition government anywhere in the world that works well? Each of the examples I have heard have their own issues and are not necessarily economic powerhouses or places that people are flocking to live in.

Sperosi - I think a more pressing question is, "Is there any kind of government anywhere in the world that works well?" Every kind of government has its downfalls and actions that make its people, and others watching, exasperated. Even places that are supposed "economic powerhouses" can be very touch-and-go depending on the actions of other countries, and as far as people flocking to live anywhere, it's a matter of economic and geographical comparison - poor immigrants from Latin America might prefer Sweden if it were on the same continent.

"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

yeah, that sums it up I think. they all are horrible, but some less so in ways than others.

I'm not naive, but I despair at the negativity surrounding new ideas and people who try to make things better. I'm sure there are lots of corrupt and bad politicians, but surely there a lot still with high ideals? I look at David Cameron and Nick Clegg(new Prime Minister & Deputy) and see the chemistry between them and see that they could be good for the country. I suppose it's like a lot of other situations where humans frequent, some will be corrupted for short term gain and others will resist. My god I would resist!! To sell your soul for power or money is the worst crime. Anyway let's all be positive 'cos that's me !!!
