So can you create the style of box to start with? And what ideas did you have that won't work, then we can maybe come up with something
Please Help, need inspiration
Hey,
Right here's the thing, I'm in desperate need of some inspiration. I've been set and art project to create a Joseph Cornell style box but I have to make it personal to me and I have about 6 weeks to do it, It has no limitations, so any media or style is acceptable and it can be really big or small. I mean I have had lots of ideas but none that I can really get to work so if any of you out there have any ideas at all they'd be really appreciated??

Did you research both Joseph Cornell and Joseph Cornell style box using a search engine. I was able to get a short synopsis of his life and design style as well as pictures of his designs. As CW asked, what ideas do you have that you think won't work?
Think of Joeseph Cornell as being the first Scrap book or Photo/ Memory/Collectibles of his Life or Experiences kinda person to take things and put them together in a Theme .
To make it Personal,... Means to make it something Important or Reflective to Yourself.
My Daughter (now 20 and in College for Graphic Arts & Design & Production) had to do something like this in High School.
Being Artistically Motivated in drawings and photoshop and all the Web based things. Her first attempted " Final " was Things she has been drawing and coloring and Artsy things from the age of 9 till 17. Of course very Improved but failed the pre final.
It was too much "personal" for her Art teacher . As you can make it Personal, but you have to have others " Think outside of the Bx" that can See your " Inside of the Box "
She, the teacher, gave her another Chance to really put in an Effort. That was Not just a " Hum Drum Boring, lets get it over with and Pass the Class ".

My daughter asked the "Tribe/Family"
How to think ouside of the "Box" ?
We came up with a few questions like
" What are your interests " ? "What would you Like to do ? " What , besides drawing and learning about more drawing can you Do ?"
It wasn't surprising that most of her answers were " Arttistically Motivated "
We did get one or two answers out of her, One was cooking the other was being 1/4 Itallian.
She was interested in her Heritage, being mostly Native American and the other was anything to do with Pasta..
So we bought her stuff for an Italian Dinner ( old Grandmothers recipies). Manacotti, Rigatoni, Lasagna, Pesto's, Salads and Deserts. It was part of passing High School . Grade 12.......
Had her cook and supply a 5 course meal , Take pictures, Even the failed ones . Trial and Error, we ate it.
Her Final " Cornell Box" ** That she turned in was..
9 sections of a box in a box. unevenly put, but personal.
1) They included, a photo of herself (myspace type that she approved of )
2) A drawing when she fell in love with drawing ( about age 9 )
3) A dried tomato paste on a noodle ( linguine we think )
4) A picture she saw about Graduating ( cap and gown kinda thing)
5) A Certificate for being a Yearbook Club photographer ( for 2 years)
6) Proof she Took Spanish for 4 years ( it's the upcomming language here in the USA )
7) More Artistic things and plans to go forward with her dream. ( copyrighted items on Deviant Art )
8) A smear of homemade Pesto sauce ( green smear ) Gawd knows what ? It's Greenish now ?
9) Box was a Complied Photo of her as a baby with her " Italian side Grandma" Her native Parents and her Desire to go " Pixar or Disney "
Hmm this teaches her to Go Out of Cornells Box, but also stay within his rulesd fora LESSON" about you or what you see in YOU.

The box can be anything I want, a shoe box, small cupboard, shape of my head anything at all and it can be made out of any material what so ever.
Well I kind of want it to be really random because then it really does reflect my personality and I'm slightly tempted to involve the idea of maybe it being made but eco friendly? Like go down the beach and places collecting unwanted items and rubbish to create the box. Like a recycled style box.
I'm also tempted to maybe have one section of it about my boyfriend but then theres always the possibility that we'll break up between now and september in which case that section could be messed up completely.
One of the ideas that im not sure how to make work is that i like the idea of having a little compartment that when you pull it out maybe a ladder drops down but i really dont know how id get that to work?
And the idea of one area being my deep dark secret and i thought maybe i could make lips with the tongue sticking out and when you pull the tongue it rolls out to be a long strip of paper with my secret on it, But once again i dont know how i'd make that work?
Yes i have researched him and I found one really good site with a section that helps you create text for your background which Im definitely going to use.
His baby girl: I really like the idea of what your daughter did, especially the cooking, i LOVE cooking lol so i think i might try incorporating that. I do sugar craft so thats creating flowers and things like that out of sugar so i think i might try adding stuff from that, maybe make a butterfly??

Well we are learning a bit about you, you like Butterflies, the Beach or being Echo Friendly, Cooking, Boys .. Lol.
So when is this Due ? And do you have any funding for it or funding limits ? There are many things right there that can be a start.
The first thing is to write a List of things you see as a "Description of You", which is some of the things you have listed.
The next is to determine the Size of the box, which includes what you want and how much you want people to know about You.
***My daughter chose 9 items / sections , as it was 3 about her artistic abilities/asperations, 3 about her ethnic background and 3 about what she had accomplished or wanted to acomplish and they all enter~twined with who she was, who she is and who she wants to be.
The 3rd is to determine the " Frame" of the box and how many panels and how big or small they should be . In the "frame" of the box, what material (s) are/ is at your Disposal.?
Could you make the frame out of Sugar or Sand ?
** You'd have to build a wood or metal or cardboard Template or pre-frame to hold any non solid materials. And use a wax or Parafin to coat and hold the Frame together , if Sand or Sugar or any soft material. Depending on size it may have to be supported by firmer materials.
Can you make it out of Driftwood from the beach, Dried Seaweed, Do you have a picture frame or a piece of metal or styrafoam or plastic to form what you will add to it as the " Box Frame" That will hold all you are sharing ?
When my daughter got her assignment she had almost the same amount of time you had. Like I am doing with you, I asked her the same questions , only I was the one who had the funding .. LOL
