    Hiya

I am curious if there are any Canadians here that have traveled to the UK. I am traveling there next year to visit my bf and just wanna know the whole routine with the airport... I'm a bit paranoid that i'll go on the wrong plane or lose my luggage or even get sent back home because i have the incorrect paperwork. Any help is REALLY appreciated

Hey there! Well I'm not Canadian but have traveled a fair bit. Airports are REALLY easy to navigate. Just think about all the different kinds of people who travel every day without problems, people who can't even speak the language of the country they're flying to.

Losing luggage is pretty much out of your hands, though that happens pretty rarely.

Just arrive at the airport with your passport, ticket, and luggage. There are plenty of signs everywhere to tell you where you need to go. If you get lost, ask for directions. Always arrive at least a couple of hours in advance.

Lost luggage can happen. Always a good idea to have real necessities in your carry on (a change of underwear, etc). You can't carry liquids on flights for security reasons. Don't wear clothes with lots of metal buttons or clasps or they will set of the metal detectors.

Also don't wear a bra with metal underwires.. My daughter wears them and gets patted down everytime.. lol

Be prepared to take your shoes off and possibly go thru a body Xray machine.. Here in the USA we had that Christmas day Underwear Bomber that set his crotch on fire trying to set off a Bomb in his skivies , but only managed to burn his Gonads and a few years ago we had a guy that had explosives in his shoes..

Another thing, if you are taking any medications with you make sure they are in your name and also ask your Dr. for a Letter stating what meds and what doeses you are taking.

A few other suggestions and comments in no particular order:

Get some of the money for the country you are traveling to (British pounds) before you leave (the airport will sell them). You don't want to be in a foreign country without cash. (maybe at least $100 worth)

Jetlag - best bet is to stay awake at normal awake times and lie in bed (sleeping or not) during normal sleep times. Eat meals at normal time (even if you aren't hungry). Spend as much time in the sun as you can. Coffee is fine to stay awake in the morning but avoid after lunch time. Expect to feel like a zombie for a couple of days. (DON'T DRIVE!).

    The UK is really expensive.

If you are flying into Heathrow - there is good train service to downtown paddington station. The Heathrow express is very fast (15 minutes) but very expensive. At the same station (follow the Heathrow express signs) the "heathrow connect" is a bit slower (25 minutes) much less expensive. Cab prices are crazy, and much slower.

UK rail service is good in general.

Be careful crossing the street in the UK - the cars come from the opposite direction - very dangerous, can die that way.

If you have a passport you will have no trouble getting there or home.

The flights will be listed - and they won't let you on the wrong flight.

Pack very light. 1 small suitcase should be fine. One pair of comfortable walking shoes that you wear on the flight. I never even check luggage for a 1 week trip, sometimes do carryon even for a 2 week trip. (yes it is possible!)

Bring a book to read on the flight - the movie may be awful.

When you get off the plane, just follow the long line of people to customs and immigration. The will just check your passport and the arrival card you fill out on the plane.

Bring a pen with you to fill out the arrival card.

Bring a snack for the flight in case the food is inedible.

Wear comfortable clothes on the flight - no on cares how you look, and no one looks good after a 10 hour flight.

Have fun in the UK, its a great place. (are you staying in London or somewhere else?).

In case you are nervous about flying: airlines don't crash - much safer than driving. There may be turbulence - the plane will be fine. If you are worried that it is so rough that the plane might break, put something soft (a crumpled napkin for example) in your lap. I promise you that there is nothing to worry about unless the turbulence is so bad that it flies off you lap and hits the ceiling of the plane (even then you would be fine by a big margin). Turbulence always feels worse than it is.

In general when traveling, if you act like a sheep and follow everyone else you will wind up in the right place.

wow that's great thanks rcoreyus those are great tips . I'm headed to Liverpool to visit my bf for four weeks, don't even have to worry about hotel costs either cause am staying with him hehe . Do they let u bring ur own snacks onto the plane? i thought they didn't let u bring ur own snacks on board. I've been sorta worried though that i need a lot of paperwork to stay there for four weeks.. i know i'll probably need traveler's insurance but that's all i can think of besides my passport and id's... yea i've heard that planes are safer then cars to travel i guess it's mostly just my fear of heights... and the fact that i watch mayday every now and again haha. well acting like a sheep hasn't been one of my greater talents i'll give it a go lol. thanks

You can bring snacks but not liquids on the plane. Usually there are sodas and water available all during the flight. Usually you can also bring liquids you bought after going through security (but maybe not at heathrow).

Do you know how you are getting to liverpool? If you are flying into Heathrow, you can take the train to Paddington station, then subway (or walk if you want) to a different london station (kings cross????) and train to Liverpool (I did that last year).

I think 4 weeks is fine - there is some limit to how long you can stay as a tourist so you should check, but I think it is fine.

The worst part about the flight is that it will be really dull. Sitting for 10 hours in a metal cylinder with nothing to see out the window - and with poor food and bad movies on tiny screens with headsets that don't work. Bring something to read!

I've never bought traveler's insurance - and I take about 6 international trips a year.

Be sure to drink some water or other liquid on the flight - 10 hours in dry air can leave you very dehydrated.

Again - pack light! Really light!. For 4 weeks you will need to check a suitcase I think - but be sure you can move all your stuff by yourself.

    Enjoy the trip!
