I need some advice about applying for a job. I'm 29, I have worked before but only for cash, I have experience with working with people, communicating etc. I'm about to enter new chapter of my life and I'm able to focus of where I want to be. My question is...since I can't write a resume should I still write a cover letter? I'm new to this and I'm sorry. I would like to get a good job and do things right way. I research things before go after them only to make sure I'm doing it all right. If you can give me any advice of how to do things the right way I would really appreciate it. This is a really big step in my life and means a lot to me.

You can still have a short resume with education, appropriate hobbies, etc.

When applying for a job remember that whoever is looking at resumes and cover letters probably has a pile of them to go through quickly. Also remember that they are human - and will pay attention to interesting things. Generalities aren't very useful, everyone is a "dedicated worker who takes pride in doing a high quality job" or somesuch. Think of something special you have done that might indicate that you are good for the job: "organized a fund fund-raising picnic for the endangered fire ant" or something.

Starting out in the work force is difficult - especially in this terrible economy. It will be especially difficult since you are older than most people looking for a first time job. Employers will wonder why you haven't worked before - so have a good answer ready. (didn't need to work is an OK answer).

What are you interested in doing long term? What have you been doing? What skills do yo have that might be useful?

I agree with all the above, still write up a resume and go ahead and include some jobs anyway. When listing what you did in each job, you have to be a bit clever and make sure that the descriptions are more interesting than just "was a cashier" or whatever it may be.

Get your foot in the door somewhere - you might have to start with an entry-level job - and from there on out you'll be able to go in a lot of directions. Maybe start by looking at temp jobs, in a different country even!

Expand your contacts - fortunately or unfortunately that seems to be one of the best ways to find a job.

In terms of job search, unfortunately
