Sending gifts overseas...??
So... I've been wanting to buy a certain phone and realized it's WAY cheaper in the States than here in New Zealand. It's about $300 (USD) off Ebay but $800 (USD) from a shop in NZ. So that's a pretty huge difference.
I was wondering what would happen if I bought it off Ebay, shipped it to my parents' house in the States, and had them send it to me in a new package with other gifts or whatever. Would I get charged a ridiculous amount of tax? Does it basically just come down to luck, whether or not the package can get through without the phone being noticed?
Why wouldn't you be able to do that? It could just be your parents sending you a gift for all they know... there's nothing illegal about that. Or, you could just have your parents actually buy the phone and ship it to you, then you could just pay them back?

The problem here can be the " Declaration" of the Gift. On Both sides.
I have shipped my Dream Catchers, I make all over the world, but some countries have a Ban on things like leather and feathers. that come from other countries.
When someone orders one from me , I always Package it as a Gift and use the words " Wall Hanging" or " Wall Art" on it.
I do not Insure it and always claim the Value is under $50 USD. And of couse , the feathers I use are not Contaband For my country. And as a note, I usually put Happy Birthday or Merry Christmas on it.
I have received feathers from Aus and Uk , CAE, SA and a few other places and they just put Gift , ( DVD or CD) actually send a CD blank or not in it and used the Feathers as Packaging Material. I then make their Dream Catcher and Return them their Gift from Their Birds and with their " Packaging" just turned into a Wall Hanger ".
Hmm. I suppose I could get them to write a smaller value on the "declaration" bit, but not sure what word I could use to substitute "cell phone." Calculator?Just in case they see it in an xray machine...
