Fired over Facebook comments is a new trend. Many people don't realize that comments over Facebook can get them fired from their job. Facebook is a popular social networking site that is also used by companies that have fired employees over posted comments.

Facebook is a social networking site, but it is also a public repository for employers. In fact, potential employers are using the online service to research new recruits before they are hired. It's a growing trend while Facebook's privacy settings are still being criticized.

Most users on the social site don't even know how public their comments are before it's too late. Posting inappropriate comments can get people fired. For example, waitress Ashley Johnson was fired over a Facebook post in which she spoke disparagingly about customers.

Johnson was fired within two days because she violated a company policy. Overall, about 8 percent of all U.S. companies have fired employees over public Facebook comments. Employees should also be careful not to get caught posting comments on Facebook while "home sick" from work. Most users believe that the social networking site is time away from work, and that their employer has no business snooping over their comments.

It seems that we all need to go check our Facebooks and My Space and other "Sites" we share.

What you have in it or say in posts could possibly get you Fired or even Denied for a Job.

I personally know someone that was a New Hire, in our store. We swapped Emails and I went to add her as a friend on FB.. Wow !! is all I can say, there she was in all her " Glory, Nekkid Glory that is.." Wearing only a Santa Hat and a Red Scarf and Red Boots.... Standing Bare in the Snow with her arm around a Snow Man they had built ...

Of Course I emailed her and told her what I saw.. The next day the Pic was gone and she tried to explain it off as her Cousin who looked just like her .. The funny thing was Her " Cousin" was wearing the exact same Watch & Necklace as Tina ..

If our Boss or DM or Corporate would have seen that .. She would have been gone from the Job in a Heartbeat..

...and that's exactly why I don't use Facebook. Or, one of the reasons.

Although you can make your profile private so only people on your "friends" list can view it, people talk and things can quickly get around. And also be careful about posting something on someone's "wall" that may not have a private profile.

Same here, don't have Facebook, never had Myspace. The whole privacy thing and what information they 'sell' chaps my hide. Criminals staking out pages, looking for people who have blabbed to the world they are leaving on vacation or a trip, for the soul purpose of breaking into their place when they are gone, etc. Of course, half the problem is the lack of common sense regarding what the users post, so....

You can't rely on the privacy of anything you do on the internet - including posts here. You can be anonymous from casual observers, but with effort an expert could likely figure out who you are.

    That is so ture RC..
Sometimes all people need is a City or Town, Last or First name, a phone # or even just an approx age

You can search and find them, or links to find them . Scary thought

I actually got a " spam" mail about someone from my High School Alumni looking for someone with my first name, which is extremely unusual., I did click the link and it said 8 people were searching. Only gave Age & Town.

Of course I was Curious about the good old 1970's and the peeps I grew up with ...But at the last minute I decided to not join the site.

I then went to Whitepages and typed in my name, town & State.Sure enough there was my Phone # and Address. I then had to go to another site of whitepages, to take out my address and #. It wouldn't let me delete my name..

The progress of the internet can be such a benifit to us, but also can be detrimental to us.

I have a Myspace & a Facebook and the Yahoo or Hotmail (site blogger things ). I rarely check them, rarely post anything. Have them all set to " Friends Only" but still get Invites from others, strangers. Mostly from Italian people with the same last name and in Italian. That is when I go to Babelfish, Translate, C&P take to a totally separate unconnected to me email Addy, Write a reply in Italin.. and Deny there request and ask that I not be contacted again.

Time consuming to say the least.. But I am still searching for my Husband who has been Missing for Years and was originally from Chile. ( the earthquake in the spring is what I am concerned about to see if I am widowed or if I can file the 7 year Missing person divorce here in USA )

I get the Italian last name requests , because my Husbands father was from Italy, but his Mother was from Chile and they use both parents last names in their childrens birth certificate as one last name .

Another very simple way to find people is sites like this one.. You Must Register to Post. Sure you can make up a Nickname. But you must provide an Email address. Which is then an IP address. which can be easily tracked. As the IP .. is exactly the address that your Computer resides at ( connection or registered to ) .

It used to be Cell phones and the New I net phones were safe from Tracking.. But Not anymore.

It isn't just Facebook, if you write a letter to the newspaper or a magazine it can be found years later - even if you wrote if before they were on line.
I know someone who is being sued for a comment, actually fairly innocuous, made on FB to a friend, about a company they used to work for.
That is why we will sometimes remove personal info from people's posts. most of us could be identifiable by someone who knows us or if someone really worked at it but there is no reason to just flat out say here I am.
