It is getting pretty obvious that even if we raise taxes to unbearable levels for everyone and we cut spending in all areas to the bare bones we can not pay this much money back in even a generation. What is the solution?

The ration of debt to GDP in the us isn't terrible, though it could be better. On possible source of money is to reduce healthcare spending. The US spends about 2.2Trillion $/year on healthcare (and growing fast), about 2X what is spent in Europe, but our health isn't any better. We could probably cut half that with only a minor decrease in health, and gradually pay back the debts.
The debt burden is huge and growing. Historical data suggests that at current levels, economic growth will be slow.
