Cool I need help making a career choice...

Ok, so since forever I've been wanting to become a psychologist. I've been busy lately, researching colleges and I've applied to about 3. I planned on going to college for 4 years, and then getting a degree in psychology and hopefully start working very soon. Then, someday I would go back to college and get a higher degree in psychology to advance my studies. However, I've been thinking about Cosmetology. And last night, I visited an Empire Beauty School in my area for a tour and well I liked it. Admission is easy, and if I went to their school I would graduate in only a YEAR and become a licensed cosmetologist then. So, I guess I would be making money faster. That's of course, if I developed a good client list.
Psychologists make more money though, and I don't know what I would be doing for work in the meantime if I were to go to college for psychology.
So last night I got this idea, what if i went to college for cosmetology first and graduated, then enroll back into another college and study psychology. And as my way of supporting myself for that 4 years I would be a cosmetologist.

OR, is that a completely crazy idea??
    What should I do?

I have taken too many psych course to tell you that each prof will remind the class anyone who is interested in psychology and wants to go places in psychology will need a PhD-obviously you do not need to be a prof but its just that process of getting the PhD to get places in the field that is important. If you want to do the therapy side of things you need a clinical psychology degree, or equivalent, which they have repeatedly stated is analogous to trying to enter medical school (its not actually med school but that sort of difficulty to get into). So make sure that if you are wanting this higher degree you can find out what requirements you will need to be a full blown psychologist. You will obviously need to decide what sort of psychology you want to focus in be it more clinical science based or more artsy child development, personality psych, abnormal (psych problems), therapy etc. An intro psych course is a joke, they do not really tell you much as to what is out there as psychology is a big big field.

    Psychologists make more money though
Relative to a cosmetologist yes, greatly so. Registered psychologists, PhD usually, can make easily 6 figure incomes. That initial undergrad psych degree though is likely going to cost a years salary being a cosmetologist if you decide to do that. Technically that means no student loan debt but it also means no pretty income while in school.

Make sure you go to the school and ask questions, go to those open houses, or department open houses to meet with profs and see how the school operates the degree. Send emails to the department advisers to get information and just keep doing that.

I thinking getting a certified skill that you can be employed in and then continuing your education is a great idea!

Colleges have all sorts of resources available to help you determine a field that you may have an apptitude for and to find out what the employment options are in many fields. One of the reasons that women earn less than men is that they tend to study and get degrees in areas that just don't pay well. Doing your research can help avoid that. It costs the same to get a 4 yr degree in social work as it does engineering, But one has the potential to pay a whole lot more out in the real world. Do your homework and find out what pays, what the projections are for hiring in various fieds and if you have the interest and drive to get through the program.

This is a time of transistion and many fields that people have relied on to support themselves and their families are no longer going to be an option, while new fields are opening up.
