Thanks CW..One of your posts really took me back to my childhood.

How many kids grew up getting hand me downs? All of my clothes growing up were hand me downs with the exception of my summer vacation clothes. The funny thing is that I don't ever remember feeling embarrassed about my clothes. Do parents even do this anymore?

How many hand me down survivors are out there?

I grew up with handme downs from my aunt who was a year older. Then they started down the line - I have three sisters. At some point they would be too worn and the younger ones probably got more new stuff than the two of us who were older.

We did get new underwear and sox and shoes, saddle oxfords for school, tennies (Keds, they cam with a whistle) for home. Usually for Easter we got new dress up shoes which were worn to church the rest of the year - or you wore new saddle orfords and the older ones to school. Shoes were a little loose when you got them and little tight when you got out of them.

The other thing we had, I think of as Sound of Music outfits. My mom would get a good deal on fabric and make herself and all of us matching clothing, including the little triangle scarf. I started sewing my own clothes in 4th or 5th grade. The first dress I made entirely for myself I wore for my 5th grade school picture.

My kids had a lot of hand me downs when they were little and I made them some killer outfits - I was a professional seamstress for a time.

Oh my goodness... I didn't have hand me downs really, as a child, I was the oldest. However, my youngest, gets probably 70% of my oldest clothes. For boys, it's not really a big deal. Levi's, they never go out of style. Shirts generally get too trashed to bother with keeping though, and I never keep the socks or underwear. But, seriously, clothes are freaking expensive when they outgrow them every 3-6 months. It hasn't slowed and my oldest is 10. However, this is all casual clothing, they have uniforms for school, so it really depends on wear and tear for those to be handed down. So, the benefit on that is there is really little wear and tear on casual clothing, so I keep a lot of those.

Anything I don't keep, I take to Goodwill though.
