    Default Death of a Marine

Google [Arizona swat kills Marine Botched Raid] and read some of the articles. Comments please, but keep it civil. It is sad that a Marine who defended our country (USA) met his demise in such a sordid way. I hope the situation is justly resolved.
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.
    ...
Shall we gather strength by irresolution and inaction? Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance by lying supinely on our backs and hugging the delusive phantom of hope, until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot?

This is really sad and unfortunate, especially for the marines family. From the news report, it doesn't seem like the swat team was unjustified, but shooting him 60 times seems excessive. Still, a sad situation & it'll be interesting to see how the public reacts.

    Very sad story.
I hope justice will be served, but nothing will bring this poor man back.

I read it a few weeks ago. Very sad, especially considering that they didn't find anything in his home (or they said they didn't at the time of that press release - correct me if I'm wrong.)
And if they were staking out his home, how could they NOT know his wife and child were there?
It would be sad if it were anybody, but it is particularly poignant that it was a Marine. They should have expected he would try to defend his home, especially if he were confused about why a SWAT team might be outside.

    You are right.
Except according to one report I read, he still had the security on his AR-15 rifle.
So he was not trying to shoot anybody but rather see what was up.
Plus the "invaders" used a "No knock" on the house...

The topic is highly emotionally charged, given the quality of his service, the horrid way the attack was conducted, the equally horrid way the communication was handled after,
and the fact that Memorial Day is next week (May 30th).

I read here and there that the Marines should do a "no knock" on the SWAT too...very sad all together...

I'm still confused about the story. It said they watched him & his house for awhile & even suspected him of doin reverse recon on their team members. Why would they go to such drastic and dangerous measures if they weren't sure he was a dangerous man? They would have known he was a marine and had a wife and kid in the house. I saw that they did a no knock, but video made it sound like the marine would have been aware of their presence, with sirens going outside. It seems like swat could have handled it better, but I'm sure more details will come out soon. Still seems extreme to me. I get the whole "drugs are bad" thing, but I didn't read anything about the marine being an immediate threat to anyone. Why not pull him over when he's driving somewhere and get a warrant to search his house? I would think he would have been treated with more respect, even if he was breaking the law.

No knocks are becoming increasingly popular, and while I understand the desire to keep the officers as protected as possible, there have been numerous cases now of tragedies occurring during these raids. This is an example of why the "if you didn't do anything wrong, then you don't have anything to worry about" mentality doesn't fly with me, because they've performed raids on the wrong houses, killed pets, and even shot and killed innocent people, in all the ensuing chaos of a no knock.
