My husband asked me that question at breakfast this morning. After I thought about it I said that I sleep all that I need to. After he left I realized that that wasn't quit true. I should have said that I sleep all that I can. When I go to bed and try to sleep (after all marital relations are over) I am troubled with guilt and, lately, with the horror of past events. I get to sleep about half the time, the other half I get up and do things around the house, use my computer or try to meditate. I figure that I average about 4 hours sleep a day, sometimes more, sometimes less.

4 hours a day is really low, most people need more like 8. If you don't feel tired then 4 hours may be enough for you, but it would be pretty unusual.

It sounds like anxiety and stress are keeping you awake at night and you will be much happier if you can work on this.

I may have missed in some other thread - why do you feel guilt?

If horrible past events are keeping you awake, it might make sense to try therapy - I don't know how well it works, but it is worth a try.

8 hours or more, or there will be heck to pay, but I must interject that my sleep is shattered into fragments by nursing, bedsharing baby and husband leaving for work in the wee hours.

I understand what you mean about feelings getting in the way of sleep. Last night, I incidentally ran across some info that led me to contact my oldest half-brother for the first time (started a thread about that.) I meant to go to bed early, but once I found the info I needed, I couldn't stop until I found a way to make contact.

Me too. During the work weel 7.5-8 is all I can squeeze in. But what comes most natural to me is 9-10.

Ideally, I wouldn't sleep at all, but too many days of only four hours make me [more] nuts, so I need eight to nine every once in a while.

When I am off in the summer from school I try to get about 6-7 hours of sleep or more whenever I can. But I am a morning person and unless I am hung over I rarely sleep for more than 9 hours. But I also wake up a lot even if I get 7-8 hours of sleep so that number is not actually 7-8 hours of pure sleep.

During school though it is not uncommon for me to get about 4-5 hours of sleep. I do stress about exams even though I have taken so many I know the routine of them and I know the material. I also have so many assignments and papers to write that it takes up huge amounts of time and my usual bedtime when in school, unless I am absolutely exhausted, is about 1 and I get up at 6.

About 7 hours, usually. Once in a great while as much as 10, and sometimes not at all.

While I was going to school, I probably averaged about 4 hours a night (pulled all-nighters at least twice a week, and slept in on weekends). SO glad I don't have to do that anymore... I didn't notice how much it took a toll on my body until I was done with school and was on a more normal sleep schedule.

I used to adore my sleep... Now, even if I try, I can rarely sleep more than 6 hours or so. For some reason, no matter what time I go to bed. My eyes pop open between 5am-6am and all is over. However, I rarely get out of bed then. I'll lay in bed and read for a while, until 7:30 or so. Kind of clear my mind before I go downstairs and get on the computer to work.

If I'm stressed, sleep is pretty non existent. I can fall asleep quickly, most of the time I'll fall into bed and be asleep in less than a minute when stressed, however, I'm up constantly throughout the night for hours, until I just give up.

Generally 5 to 6 hours, but as much as 7 hours on a weekend. Depending on circumstances, I can sleep 8 to 10 hours on vacation if I am somewhere without electricity.

I've been thinking about my sleep pattern all day. I have been meditating every morning, usually at 4AM. Since my husband gets up at 5AM I have one hour to meditate. If I'm successful in reaching a meditative state, it last anywhere from a few minutes to over 30 minutes. This relaxes me and refreshes me, almost like 2-4 hours sleep would. Maybe with the meditation my sleep requirement has been reduced. Just a thought.
