Question Trying to find a good way to quit my job but on good terms

I have worked at the same place for over a year now. My mom found a job through her company that i would be intereseted in. So, here is my dilema. I really want to interview for this job. I know it's a good possibilty that I would get it, but I'm already scheduled for all of next month at the job I have now.
I'm not sure, if i do get this job, how i can leave this job on good terms when I would be leaving them with a whole month with no one to cover my shifts.
I obviously want to leave here on good terms since I've been here for so long. This job opportunity though, I would actually have advancment opportunities and not be stuck in one postion the whole time I'm there. Like I am at my job now.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think anyone would blame you for wanting to better yourself. If you give them at least two weeks notice, which is common in the working environment, I think (at least would hope) they would have ample time to get things in order for your absence.
There is a method to my madness ........ I just haven't found it yet.

Rule of Thumb, as they say .
Search for a new job, but do Not leave the other One until you have the New one.

Go to the New Job Interview ASAP. Apply and have at least the First Interview.
Under " May we Contact your current Employer ? " put in Not at this time.

Give Reasons that you gave above. I do Not want to Strand my Coworkers or Employer with someone who just Leaves everyone on the hook ".

If that Interview goes well, talk with your Now Boss, and explain that you May be moving up and on. Explain the differences in the Jobs, Benefit's and tell them it is not Final, but you don't want to leave them on the Hook. Ask them about the Company's Regulations ( the ones for giving a 2 week notice in writing ).

Ask if, they were called, would you get a good Reference or not ? Ask for any Copies of reports on attendance, comments and even " write up's"

Make sure Both the Future Employer and the Current one Know that you are not a Just an I Quit type of Person. You would rather change Careers or move fields or get more Experience, Money, Health insurance.

A Good Employee may very well " Go Up The Ladder " Change Jobs or Careers and Fields. Their Employment History is Very Valuable. Are they Quitters or Skippers, No Show's, Lazy or the One Employee I would not Replace ?

    And if that Job didn't work out .. I would Re~Hire in a Heartbeat .. from Both Employer's !!

Other than that.. Keep it Simple, Stay Employed >

Be Positive in any Interview and Application .. NEVER give any Facebook or My Space Email Address. NEVER !! Never put Reason for leaving and add ( My Boss/ My Co~worker was/ Is ) The Best to say is ( put in experience ) Personal Growth with my Assets and Interest in the ( Fill in Job )

Make a One and Only Professional email for any Job Apps or Information . If you have a Cell Phone or a Home phone.. Take off the Music, Funky Music and Ringtones.
Just have a Polite ( or pre recorded) This Number is not available, but we will take your call message .

Leaving a job for a new, better opportunity is one of the most common and VALID reasons. Hand in your notice on time, follow that procedure by the book, and no one will look down on you for leaving. Them not having a replacement for you is their problem, not yours.

I definitely know not to quit a job with out a for sure one on hand.
My whole issue here is, I've had problems with my boss. Not horrible ones that would affect any references. For instance, a couple weeks ago, i was supposed to work an overnight shift. Earlier that day I ended up in the doctors office. Because of what was going on with me, the doctor didn't want me to go to work. I called my boss and told her what was going on. She then made it seem like it was my fault we are under staffed and that there was no one to cover the shift. There have been at least one more instance similar to what happened last week. Where they blame me for being short handed, when it's completely out of my control. Although, I have gone above and beyond my duties to help them out whenever possible. I have helped them out so many times, that I honestly could be an assistant manager. I know the ropes of here so well, and have helped them in every aspect to take that position. I have not gotten any recognition for any of my hard work, however. It's sad that customers that come through tell me I deserve a raise but yet my manager has yet to give me one.
I am a very hard worker and very out going. That's why I am so confident about getting this other job. I know all the in's and out's of applying and interviewing for jobs. I just hate to leave here, after being here for so long, and not get a good reference.
I'm probably over analyzing the situation, but my anxiety gets the best of me sometimes!

It's bad form and a good way to get a bad reference to just walk out the door one day, so as long as you give them at least a two week notice, that should be fine.

I delayed starting my current job for a month because I didn't want to leave my boss in a bind. As it was, I had people flying in from around the country and I was the trainer and developer of the training materials under the tutelage of my boss. I waited two weeks then gave a two week notice that coincided with the end of the training sessions. My boss could have taken over, but I felt obligated to finish what I had started. Make sure everything is in order with a new job offer as far as how long they will allow you to stay at your present job and that you know all the rules and regulations. Then follow BG's advice on how to approach it. Do not let the chance that a former boss could be vindictive interfere with your advancement. At the same time, never change jobs too often as that will be a red flag to recruiters.

It sounds like you work at a large, thankless company, many of which do not allow their management to give reviews at all, for legal reasons. They also don't give out employment information like attendance and write-ups.

Regardless of whether your leaving can "follow" you or not, you still want to put in that two-week's notice. If your company has an email system you have access to, print out a paper two-weeks' notice with the date on it before giving it to HR or whomever handles HR in your store. Make sure you keep a copy of it as well.
End your job on positive terms with your boss specifically, even if she tries to play the "pity game" with you upon finding out you're leaving. You never know who her best friend could be, and that connection could do you a great deal in the future - you can never be sure!

I'm sure you knew about the 2 week notice and also the Job Interview process. I didn't mean to imply you didn't hun.
What I was hoping to do is help make it smooth and less of a predicament and transition between you and the Companies ( Both ).

Always try to leave a Company, especially the larger ones, with the Big Flashing Red Flag in HR, that says " Re-hire " !!!! so that if the new job does not pan out as well as expected you have a chance to go back to this Company you are Leaving.

I work for a Major Auto Parts Company, used to work for the Competition. My Boss also worked for the Ex Company. I was Hired because I knew my Job, Did it well and left with my 2 week. I did Not have the Job ( Home Store ) with my Now Boss. I left because of Management Conflict.

Meaning Me & Manger . She had told Me "She Owned me" when I wanted to move stores and even Upgrade in Management, to be her equal and her Competition in the District.
She kept giving me " Write Ups " Small little things, but in that Company you could not relocate within 90 days of Any Write up, hence a " No Rehire or relocate". It's the Corporate Human Resources that keeps track of all that.

Finally just gave my 2 weeks and left on Good Terms with HR of the regional area because I could Not PROVE my Mgr's words or Actions. I wasn't Fired , just Nit picked by Write Ups.

I was without a Job for a Year until I found out My Now Boss was Working for my Now Company which was a Different store from my Old " Home Store " .

I still had to go thru the New Company's HR and online application. So I applied, read, reread my application over a Dozen times. When I read my comments on why I left my Previous Job. I was shocked and probably would not have Hired myself, if I was HR .. Lol

It was a Long explanation of what happened, how abused and used I felt by the " She Manager ", how I was wanted by the Other Store Manager and how I felt about being told I was " Owned". So I just adjusted my Online Interview in writing/ Application" to the Basics.
I added that the reason I left my last Employer/ Company, was that I needed to feel I was a Valuable Asset to Any Company I worked for. So I just gauged it to the fact that I felt I could not meet my Potential.

The Hard part is ( was ) is that with the Internet Based Applications/ Tests are the hardest to get over and through. Your SS #, DL #, and even Credit ( in some cases ) is thrown up and a Computer gets Red and Green Flags.

And some, like in my Business, move companies like Crazy. One company takes over another ( or sells or Defaults ) new Company comes in , Lower Pay or Restrictions. The upper management of the New Company hires anyone from the old Competition ..

Rat Race to say the least .. Lol But again, it is to leave with them being " Sorry You are Leaving " or " Come back we really need you ".

That so ..helps with the New Company. Knowing they have a " Gem " in you .. and to top that off, You can under " comments or Other Information " have copies of Praise or as References ( Non Personal ) from those customers that Just think You are AWESOME !!

Yes, you are overanalyzing. Your boss sucks, so apply for this other place your Mom told you about, then give two weeks notice at your current job once the new place offers you a position, then leave and never look back.
