I think this is in Washington?

I was watching our Morning News today, they were showing "children's pagents" and of one 3 year old, who went for the Pretty Woman theme.

This little girl was dressed as Julia Roberts in the scene where she was a prostitute, and the end dress up was Julia Roberts in her blue and white spotted dress.

The Mother claimed, that there was nothing wrong, her daughter doesn't know what a prostitute is and thought that she was just doing dress ups, so big deal.

I don't agree and so alot of other people haven't either. Surely even if you wish to enter these things, you don't do that?

There was discussion as well on the Media is driving these pagents at the end of the day, highlighting them, so what about pediphilia. What about old cases of missing little girls, deaths... Jealousy..

I briefly heard something about this story this morning. But in the past I've watched a couple of those "behind the scenes" of child pageants... it's awful, awful stuff. I mean the way they look... shocking. But never mind even that, what about the way those poor little girls start thinking? The way they start perceiving their own worth as human beings? Their self-esteem going out the window if they don't get first prize? It's hard for me to even express how I feel about these awful things, which in my opinion should be ILLEGAL, like dog fighting.

I greatly dislike the whole subject, and it is a big pet peeve of mine but the problem is entirely the parents. The kid sees a dress, the mom sees glitz glam and attention, something they may have never had growing up but so greatly desired. The parents decide "oh I am going to put my young daughter in a get up that exposes her skin because that is what beauty is". Same thing happens outside of the pagents. Ever drive by the schools these days and see what the young girls are wearing? Mini skirts, skin tight tank tops, promiscuous words on the clothes like "juicy", "hot", "look up", "hottie", "nice buns"....it is getting out of control and it is all due to the parents allowing the behavior. A lot of the mothers in the pagents are wanna-be beauty queens, but frankly they will never be. That does not stop them from going for the limelight in any way they can using their kids as a pawn to gain that attention. Their 3 year old daughter does not know that wearing a bikini at that age actually attracts unwanted eyes, but the parents do. They know creeps are looking but they seem to think there is no such thing because they continually allow that type of attire to continue. The mothers seem to stick to the idea that the more skin, the more promiscuous, the more sexualized their baby angel princess looks the better the chance of winning a beauty pagent. Beauty is not sex, nor sexualization, it is something that a person grows into and not something created at the age of 3 on a sparkly stage.
There are those who believe that dictionaries should not merely reflect the times but also protect English from the mindless assaults of the trendy.

Isn't it? I remember Jo Bennett and that outraged me back then... I agree with both of you but you know it's also "what sells" in-other-words the Media's greed, the owners behind that media, surely they themselves had daughters and would never in a million years submit them to this.

I also feel sorry for the little girls as they age and grow up, who will they think they will be? Mostly they become a no-body and felt they were some-body... It would be interesting if they had a TV documentation of "where they are now" because I am betting there would be a lot of horror and sad stories to be told.
