I seriously was thinking that there is Family/ Relationships/Spouses/ Sex /Mental threads and everything from Zit's to Fits to Tit's here.

    But haven't seen a " WORK PLACE " yet.

So Figured I would Start one, see if it can Survive.

We all either are Working, looking for Work or just in Limbo.

    Discussions from ....

*Never ever had a Job or want to have a Job of any Kind.

What I would like from this thread is Input, Experiences, Techniques and Advise of " How to , when to "

Help others on What to say, when to Say it and actually Help them be Employed.

Just Please do not Give info on Company Name. Employer Name or ( ya Know Gossip with Names ) ..

    Great thread!

Okay my best piece of advice that for some reason most people DO NOT LISTEN TO is:

Apply with a TEMPING agency if you are having a hard time finding work.

A temp agency can very quickly find you a job (could be a great job... could be a sub-par job... but it's WORK!), so you can spend your free time looking for something else yet not have to worry about paying the bills. And if you're lucky your temp job will open up permanent positions within the same company since you'll already have a "foot in the door."

TEMP TEMP TEMP! I know it's not very romantic saying to your date "yeah I'm a temp," but there's no excuse not to try, if you are unemployed and are desperate for work.

Grr the day someone takes my advice I am going to celebrate. lol!

    Solid advice:

Live below your means. Try to live on 70% of your household income. Save 10% and invest 20%.

If saving/investing 30% of your income seems impossible (it's not), then try to save/invest 20%. Invest 15% and save 5%.

Might you have to make some changes to your current lifestyle? Yes. Dramatic? Perhaps. Will you live happier in retirement? Yes.

Who in here plans on dying before they retire? That's what I thought...

    Now get busy...

    Great Suggestions .

Another Work related Suggestion is about Work Clothing, I shop for mine at Thrift Stores.

Sure Our Company has Shirts, Pants, Coats for Sale on our Employee Website. But Since they do not provide our " Uniforms" I refuse to pay $18 for a Short Sleeved or $22 for long Sleeved Shirt, $30 plus for pants , Jackets are $39-$49, Just because it has the Company Logo on it.

The Name Tag I have has the Company Name & Logo, plus my Job Title and my Name. I also refuse to pay for the shirts and pants from the Company, as My job entails, getting Oil and Grease and Battery Acid, Power Steering and Brake fluid, to name a few of the Grime that I work with Daily.

We have a Dress Code. Black Pants, Black Shoes & Socks and whatever Colored shirt the Job Title holds. So, I go to the Thrift Stores, Buy the Pants and Shirts, make sure they follow the Code, ( work Pants, no Jean type material, No extra, studs. Buttons or Bling ). The Shirts can be Button up, or Pullover, but must have a Collar and no Logo's of any kind ( other than Ours ). If the Pants have belt loops you must wear a Black belt. I buy those thrift stores too ,

The Company Cost for 1 Shirt, 1 pants, 1 Jacket for me is right about $80.
The Cost at a Thrift store, for the same Dress Code approved Attire is about $20 and even less on 30%-50% off Sundays and Holiday Sales.

Since Thrift Stores are also " Seasonal " their Costs of items fluctuate with the Seasons. Short sleeved shirts in Summer, cost more than in Winter, so I shop, usually once a month, and try to get things that I may need for the Next Season.

Our Jackets or Sweaters Must be all Black , hood or not & no Logo's. So Last Month, August I started Shopping for Hoodies, Yep got a Nice thick one, Zip Up, Big Pockets, for $3.99 ( with the Discount ). Also got two Long Sleeved Shirts for about $7 for both.

Come November I will be shopping the Short Sleeved shirts

I also shop for Non Work Clothes like this.
Now Socks and Shoes I don't buy used, I just shop around, K'marche, Wally World, Payless , Target. Oriental Markets or Mom & Pop Stores are Great for Socks, Packages of 6-8 are usually only $5.99 .

With the work I Do, as Messy ( Greasy wise ) I know that by shopping at Thrift Stores, I literally Save Hundreds each Year. And after 3 1/2 years of Working at the Same place. I can Guesstimate my Cost for Work Clothes at about $50-$70 a Year.

Pending on what you are allowed to wear in the work place thereby profession, I just bagged up 5 garbage bags about to give back to the Thrift stores and see what else is new , haha, totally agree and you know that with me, I love being different.

Fire in the Belly.. have a passion for the job you go for, and show your fire in the belly for it, when you are at the interview..Bosses love that, it exceeds alot of things if they know you can learn the ropes.

I was going to post this in the " what are you thinking thread " But forgot I started a Work type thread . Lol

    So here it is .

Are there any people out there that want a Job,

Over 25...Have a Clean Criminal Record ( no Drugs/ Alcohol or Thefts, Robbery or Abusive behavior ) a Clean Driving Record ( past 5 years ). Can and are willing to work Part time, 20-30 hours a week . (trust me it can be 40 ) if you are a Good Employee.

Can and are willing to work, either 8 am to 5 pm or 10 am to 6 Pm, and a possible 2 or 3 pm till Midnight ( on Mondays Only ). Start out about Minimum wage, ( it's about $8.60 here ) but sometimes a bit higher, if they have .

Retail Experience, Auto parts ( or any Parts / Delivery ) knowledge , Good Customer Service, can answer phones, use a Computer and run a Register .
Not have Tattoos going up the Neck, across forehead, no Huge holes in ears ( new thing I guess , as we are seeing lot of the lobe Stretching up here ).

Preferred to be Multi Lingual, but clear spoken and Unbroken English is a Must !!

Are there Any people Out there that Really want a Job, can hold a Job and aren't all in some kind of " Trouble " from way back When ?

Or even New kids on the Block, that don't want a Career in this field, but it's better than Burger King or Micky "D's " or Taco Bell . Well that is only My opinion. lol

Our Problem here is Wanting Honest Trustworthy Employees that have had or do have a Good Record, willing to work, Earn and Learn. Move up or Move on ( with proper notification )

And sadly out of 23 new applicants That applied online for Our Store , there is not one person that Fits that Criteria..

Oh well, and my Boss says... He's gonna Post an Ad on Craigs list.
Yep I'll get another 42-46 hours next week .
    * sigh *

BG, I'm not sure if there are any poor college students who want a job and work experience, but flexibility on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday would maybe work as well as 4 hour blocks in either morning/early afternoon or afternoon/evening may work (one working the first 4 and another working the second 4). Some students may have some exposure to retail and some may have exposure to auto parts. Most should have computer knowledge and should be able to work a cash register/POS with a little training. The boss would have to look into customer service and answering phones.

I worked 40 hours a week in my last 4 months of high school, but I was able to go to school late and leave early under a program at school and had an employer who gave me hours when I was available (I worked at a nursery, so I dug up a lot of trees for delivery). Since I was living in a small cottage on my employer's property after I was 18, I wrote my own absence notes. Of course on Saturday and Sunday I put in full days and I worked every evening.
I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience.

We actually need 3 people, one for in the store and the other for our Commercial.

Our company delivers parts to Auto Shops and Mechanics. The 2 with each a four hour shift is a good idea. But won't work as sometimes our Drivers have to go as far as 50 miles (one way ) and with Traffic and sometimes many stops of deliveries, they would run past the 4 hour shift.
And they have to be over 25, to be insured by the company ( new rule, it used to be 21 ).

What I think is most frustrating is , is that people these days, just don't think ahead to their futures when young. They party, get DWI's have Domestic Violence, Get Fired or let go because they are late to work too many times, or have kids without back up babysitters, and so on.

Then there are those out of work, laid off or let go, that expect $12-$15 an hour or they won't work at all. They don't understand it's a start Minimum, work hard, get raises.

Laid off with unemployment benefits that keep on getting extended is not much incentive to work for minimum wage at a job that is not in line for a career track. The raising of the hiring age to 25 was done for the company benefit to lower insurance costs. Unfortunately, it has consequences. At 25, go-getters will be looking for a job with strong advancement possibilities and wages high enough after a few raises to start to think about getting money together to buy a house. It sounds like the job description and pay is a recipe to get the people who have been applying. If you have to pay minimum wage to a babysitter, there is no incentive to have a minimum wage job.

    You are so Right JNS.

Though this company has opened 2 new stores so far this year , in my County alone, all within 10 miles of my Store, a 3rd store is opening in December.
There are needs for Management and Assistant Mangers and full time and Commercial Managers and Full time Drivers as well as Part Timers.

There is room for Advancement and a Career, they just have to start out Lower and work their way up. Most of the more recent employee's at my store have come from the Competition companies and quite a few from Wal Mart.We do work around and with Military Schedules ( Part Timers only )

In the newest Stores some are hired full time right off the bat ( if Qualified ) and the pay is higher than part timers, plus they get Benefits after 90 days. Medical, Dental, paid sick and holidays. and Vacation pay after 1 year.

We had 38 applicants last two weeks, only 4 have passed the pre Screen with Corporate. Next they have to pass the Interviews and Criminal and Drivers Backgrounds.
So out of those 4 we may get 2 qualified people, then we have to see if they can work the needed shifts.

We had a pretty good Crew for about a year, then one Assist Mgr, transferred to Manage to own store in Texas. 1 Young one, that was there a year, got let go because of reaching 12 ( allowed )Termination Points ( being late, calling in sick without Dr's note).

And another young one has been with us a Year and 3 months has given notice as he has a Job offer at Boeing. He was given an Excellent reference from the Company.

Even if it is part time to start, it's a Job, and you can move up with the Company, or work hard and give proper notice when you find something you like better or better pay or whatever .

As I said, the main problem is Finding people that have not been in some kind of Trouble. Out of 9 employee's only 3 of us are over 30 years of age. We are all in our 50's.The one who left and got his own store was almost 40. All the others are 21-27.

And the other problem is people wanting High Pay, when Barely qualified in retail, or Parts, but not qualified enough to come in and know or do more than the ones who have been there and in Management for years.

I sign at least 10 " Work release " papers a week, from those on Probation or out of jail on work Release and in transition to Actual Freedom from the Courts.

It is sad to have to explain to them, we simply cannot Hire ones who have Criminal Records. Most are from Drugs, Theft,Violence, DWI's. And they are trying to start over .

Some will stay and chat a bit, as they are waiting for the next Bus. Tell their Story, show knowledge of the Field, Explain that they are turned down by every Major Company and most Mom & Pop places, Most companies that deal with People as Customers or Money Handling or Product Handling.

These People want a Job, Any Job, Part Time, even 4 hours a week. But can't get Hired because of their Past choices. And that is very sad.
