Yesterday one of my husband's fellow policeman got killed while directing traffic. Today there were 4 freeway shootings in an area where my husband patrols. I'm so worried I'm shaking but don't want to call him to see if he's ok because I don't want to seem a nagging wife.

When I first met him I thought it was cool he was a policeman. Now it is becoming a nightmare for me. I wish he would quit and get another safer job.

    Freeway Shootings Snarl :

    Traffic Throughout San Diego County

Officers are investigating a string of shootings Monday morning on the 805 and 5 freeways.

One person was wounded Monday when at least one gunman in a moving car opened fire on four vehicles, including an ambulance and a California Highway Patrol cruiser, on interstates 805 and 5, authorities reported.

Is that the one Honey ? I called my Family in the areas, ( La County too ) No Cops Died.

The gunfire began about 10:30 a.m., starting on northbound I-805 near East Plaza Boulevard in National City, according to San Diego police. At least one bullet hit a car in that assault, though no one was injured.

A short time later, a shooting on I-805 at Mesa College Drive injured a 26-year-old man, SDPD Lt. Darryl Hoover told reporters. Medics took him to a hospital for treatment of a nonlife-threatening leg wound.

Within the next 15 or so minutes, gunfire again erupted on I-805 near state Route 163, where a CHP officer was assisting a motorist and on northbound I-5 in the area of Del Mar Heights Road, according to Hoover. An ambulance apparently was targeted in the latter shooting, he said. No one was injured in those attacks.

All of the gunfire may have come from a white Chevrolet Malibu, California license plate number XXXXX , police said. That vehicle, carrying at least two men, had been involved in a hit-and-run collision on East San Ysidro Boulevard shortly before the shooting spree began, and it matched descriptions of the car involved in the firearm assaults, the lieutenant said.

Early Monday afternoon the Highway Patrol shut down a roughly three-mile stretch of northbound I-805 between I-8 and Mesa College Drive, along with the freeway's northbound connector to SR-163 so investigators could search the roadway for bullet casings and other evidence.

That's the one, I know no police were hurt. It's just the reminder that things like that happen and what could happen. I've been watching the news every since I got home.

Hubby came in like nothing had happened, like these things happen all the time so it's no big deal. He wasn't even going to tell me about it until I brought it up. He admitted that they had him patrolling the area for the shooter. He tries to keep things from me so I won't worry. I deserve to know it he is in danger even it it does make me worry.

Ok, so... was this something different or is it the same incident? Just a little confused here.

It sounds to me like she's saying that her husbands coworker was killed in a totally different incident. In addition to that, she's hearing about these shootings which make her even more concerned.

Chaya, welcome to the life of a police officers wife. I know many, and none of them feel any differently than you do. They worry, they lose sleep. It is part of the job. When they go on shift, you never know whether they're going to spend their time running traffic and writing tickets, or if they will be involved in a dangerous standoff. It's the same for military wives, wives of firemen, etc. (Or husbands of...)

You must learn quickly that you will spend your life a worried stressed nervous woman if you don't get a handle on this. It is out of your control. Most people who are in that profession, are passionate about it, and are willing to risk their lives to do their job. As a spouse, you also have to be a hero because you have to be strong and supportive in times when it seems impossible.

    "Be what you're looking for."

"The next time you're thinking of kicking someone when they're down, offer them your hand and help them back up instead."

I guess I always knew my husband had a dangerous job but I didn't want to admit it to myself. I just can't get it out of my mind, everyday when he gets home safe I am so relieved I start crying. If he is a few minutes late or the phone rings while he is at work I start shaking with fear. It might be impossible for me to finish school in this condition. I can't sleep or considerate on my studies. My husband suggested I join the Wives Behind the Badge group to meet other policeman's wives. I'm not sure they'll help me but willing to try anything.

Chaya, that is a really good idea. Even if you don't get together with the larger group, you just may find a few friends who are walking the same path. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Continue working on becoming a nurse. You will be doing something that does good for others.

Things seem to have quieted down since they caught a suspect up here in Los Angeles County.
