I saw my husband on TV yesterday. He was one of the policeman keeping watch at the occupy San Diego protest. He had to work overtime the last 3 days, I miss him but the extra money is welcome.

He told me that over half the protesters are homeless people or illegal immigrants that are taking advantage of the opportunity to raise cain, get free handouts and money from the organizers. It's costing the city a lot but is good for us to get the overtime money. I just hope it don't escalate into a riot where a lot of people will get hurt and killed. He said the riot squads were ready in case it does.

Did he check the "illegal immigrants'" papers to see if they had a green card or not? If they had papers, did he run them to see if they matched the person holding them?

Probably not. He's just calling them that to disparage them. Thanks to new and strict immigration laws, most undocumented immigrants are steering WAY clear of anything more illegal than their presence in the US is already. A routine traffic stop can get them booted back across the border in many states (maybe not California, but in my state and many of the surrounding ones, it can.) And what does a non-citizen care about the state of the US anyways?

All US citizens have the right to peaceably gather and protest. We're lucky like that, and in many other ways too. Maybe we should all temper our implied disgust at those less fortunate than us - those who have lost their homes or who are so desperate they must live as fugitives in a strange land. After all, an unfortunate turn of events could leave any one of us in the same place.

I have great empathy for the homeless. I'm not sure if I agree with them making themselves pawns for those who wish to disrupt lawful commerce. Legitimate protesters have every right to protest but when they are paid with cash or favors to protest that is another matter. My only fear about this protest is that it will turn violent and put my husband in danger. I know the police are prepared for the worst but I would not want to see my husband or his friends hurt or want them to hurt anyone, even a protester. Protests have broken out all over the country, I can't help but think they are organized by the same leaders and I wonder about their agenda.
