Getting him in the carrier in the morning will give him enough time to become comfortable with his surroundings before the trip to the vet. Give him plenty of his favorite food and water and if there is enough room, some kitty litter. If you can, continue to pet him. If he is likely to scratch or bite, put on a ski glove. Talk to him in a calming voice to help him settle down.

Well, I called the vet to see what her recommendation was. She said I could safely bring the cat indoors, so long as I kept him in a secure room away from my other pets, and didn't let anything he used (water dish, bedding, litter box) be used by my cats. So Wednesday night when he arrived for food, I picked him up and whisked him to the office. He made himself at home in the office quite quickly, he scarffed the food and water, then found the towels I laid on the floor and took a nap. Yesterday was the vet visit and that went about as expected.. he's got worms and earmites, and the wound on his ear has a slight infection. So he's being de-wormed, de-mited, and I have to put stuff on his wound and give him oral antibiotics for a week.

Now the problem is, if he's going to be a housecat, well.. he's not exactly litter trained. He used the box once, but also had an accident once. Although the accident was right after the vet visit, so may have been partially because of the stress/anxiety... so we've got to work on that. I will crate him if he has another accident, until he's trained, then hopefully find him a forever home. I'm trying to talk my parents into taking him. They had two elderly cats that passed away, and my Mom has been a bit lonely without a cuddlebuddy since. She's already sold on taking this little guy I've found, now just to convince Dad I've even offered to foot the bill to get him fixed, hoping that would be convincing enough. Luckily, Mom and Dad will be at my house tomorrow for Christmas, so I'm going to clean the cat up a bit ("dry" bath, and comb him out) so he's looking his best, and let Mom go in the office where he's being kept and they can get acquanted. She'll never resist a pretty, homeless, sweet-tempered kitty! Mwahahahaha Merry Christmas!

The best part about cats (erm, well one of them ) is how easy they are to litter train! Once he figured out what the box was all about, he hasn't had an accident since - so it seems like we're good to go with that! He did escape Friday night, snuck out of the office (my fault, I closed the door but didn't check that it latched completely), and when I opened the outside door to grab the mail, he shot outta the house like a big, fluffy bullet.

Good news is he came back the next morning, just in time for me to get him looking pretty, put a nice fancy collar/bow on him and have my parents to meet him Mom is absolutely smitten, and now that Dad sees how much Mom likes him, he's coming around too. So it seems like kitty will have a lovely forever home afterall! Another trip to the vet to get the rest of his shots, and his manhood taken care of, and he's all theirs!

Aw, what a happy ending for this formally stray kitty. I'm glad everything went well... have you given him a name, or will your parents do that?

We go between calling him "Scruffy" because he was such a scruffy mess when he first arrived, and Chewy because he's so hairy/fuzzy like Chewbacca.. anything is better than "that cat" lol

but I leave the permanent name-giving to his ultimate owners! That's one of the fun parts of getting a new pet
