Even though I didn't personally know anyone who perished on that horrible day, I will never forget it. I had been to the world trade center many times. I trained there for my job, I shopped there, I visited the observation deck with my first boyfriend after school one afternoon. I remember the smell of the buildings and how busy it was all the time. On that day, a coworker told me that her then fiancee said that two planes had hit the towers. I just could not believe it. Another coworker told me to check the news on the tv in the lounge. I remember being in tears for most of the day. Many of us wanted to leave work early but the boss wouldn't allow it. I called my husband because he often went into Manhattan for meetings without telling me and he was ok. The drive home that afternoon took about 2 1/2 hours instead of the usual 40 minutes. In the weeks that followed, I learned of many coworkers who lost family and friends and on the first anniversary, we had a plaque put up in the lobby of our office building to commemorate those who were lost. September 11 made me realize that in this world of uncertainty you have to live for today, because you don't know what tomorrow will bring. Today I watched the memorial services. It still touches me as if it happened yesterday.
