Default Desperate for answers

I am 51 years old and told I am perimenopausal. I have gushing periods that last for 12 hours-soaking 10-12 pads in that time, and I have a terrible stabbing pain in the area of my left ovary that stops when the bleeding stops at the end of the 12 hours. After about a week, black old blood and tissue comes out for about 1-2 weeks. Then I start all over....This has been going on for the last 15 years...I have been told by some doctors that are not that interested in discussing my concerns with me, that a total histerectemy is the only way to go, but I have concerns about the histerectemy, life afterward and if there are really other options. Does anyone have any advice?
Thanks

Find a real doctor! The December issue of More Magazine had a great article on the various procedures and how doctors often don't keep up to date, they stick with what they know which may not be what is best for the patient. You deserve answers. Do your research and then go in.

There are other choices....I myself have had a procedure called Endometrial Ablation, had it done about 4 years ago. I was having irregular and heavy gushers that were interferring with my quality of life. I hadn't heard anything about it until my doctor mentioned it to me...I was rather pushy when I saw him and told him what was going on and that I WANTED him to DO SOMETHING!!!
Haven't had but a few periods since then, mostly stress related.
Do a search on google, you'll find info there that may peak your curiosity enough to look in to it!!

I had this done recently too. Great decision! No muss, no fuss.

I agree on the ablation . . . I suffered for years, scheduled my life around my periods. Even vacations. Just so you know, I had to bring it up to my doctor as an option, he never mentioned it, only hysterectomy which I wasn't interested in. It was the greatest thing I ever did and now 4/5 of my friends have done the same thing.
