I am currently 63 years old and can tell you what REALLY helped me with horrible hot flashes during my late forties and early fifties. I would wake up three or four times a night with severe, “throw my clothes off” hot flashes; I was burning up. In addition to burning up, my hot flashes woke me up so that I could not go back to sleep. The next day I would be a wreck after being awake most of the night; some mornings I had to sleep until ten to feel somewhat rested. I prayed for wisdom and healing.
A friend of mine was also suffering with hot flashes, and she noticed the connection between her hot flashes and eating sugar, meat, and dairy products. I had not noticed this connection, but I was willing to try anything. So I avoided sugar, meat, and dairy products which dramatically reduced the frequency of my hot flashes. I ended up following a strict organic vegetarian diet because every time I ate non-organic meat, dairy, or sugar, my hot flashes increased in intensity and frequency.
I also tried hydro-therapy when I was at my worst, which also really helped. I learned about it through an article about a woman suffering from really horrible hot flashes; hers were worse than mine, which didn’t seem possible until I read her story. Anyway, she put alternating hot and cold packs over her adrenal glands (a little below the middle of the back) seven times for about one minute each time. I decided to try this in the shower as it seemed too cumbersome and time consuming to do the hot packs. I directed the water on my adrenal glands and counted to sixty, alternating seven times between hot and cold. Within two weeks my hot flashes were dramatically reduced!
I also drank organic soy milk and took some herbs recommended for menopausal women. The combination of everything stopped my unbearable hot flashes completely. I hope my story helps someone!
Thank you for sharing this. I've been a fan of hydrotherapy for years, it's also good for itching, fevers, colds and flu.
I've also noticed a connection with sugar a number of health issues -not related to weight. If you were to look back through some other posts, I have given my thoughts on the possible effects of BGH and menopause. I do think there is a connection.
My personal tipping point is emotion. I've been on a rollercoaster since Nov with a man who couldn't make up his mind. Literally over night I started having hot flashes regularly. Now the issue is essentially resolved and I'm not really happy but am less unhappy and have drawn my lines and accepted the situation and I haven't had any hot flashes for the past several days - none. I think it's a combination of stress reduction and diet correction.
Would you care to share what herbs you used? I'm familar with cohosh (hate that stuff, so gald I'm not needing it)
