    Default Taste in mouth

Hello I am new today and would wish to talk about my problem. I have had a bad taste in my mouth now for about 6 years next month. I have visited everyone from hypnotherapists/accupuncture, dentist and doctors without much success I am afraid. I was told by a nurse friend of mine that she believed it to be Hormonal and my latest doctor believes it is "Burning Mouth Syndrome" with the bottom line being that there is no cure, only that it will one day GO!!!! (when I ask). Has anyone experienced or know about this problem as I would like to know if it is common or not?

I was just reading up on this, to try to gleen what you may be feeling.

From all that I read, there is pain associated with burning mouth syndrome, also dry mouth, taste buds are very active and you can really taste your food, perimenopause and Menopause does seem to come into play.

Do you have any pain associated with the bad taste? Burning mouth syndrome tends to also associate with pain.

My fiance has Sjogren's Syndrome.. This also can affect postmenopausal women, the salivary ducts are not performing to their best. Do you also have dry eyes?

You may like to google that as well and see whether that fits into this.

Given you have written this on the "menopause" section, this condition is rarely known about from what I can gather, it runs in his family but it took years to be diagnosed and alcohol, cigarettes also cause the dryness.

Just something else to consider but ultimately it's the symptoms you have to describe in full to your Doctor so that he/she can determine what he/she thinks it may be and help you with it.

Just wanted to chime in on this topic, as I visited here yesterday to ask the exact same question . . . . exactly why this forum is amazing! I have been experiencing the burning sensation in my mouth for about 6 months, and each time I ovulate, it's worse. I had a hysterectomy in 2006, but they were able to leave one of my ovaries, so I would have my own hormones until menopause. . . hoo-freakin-rah! Well, I am 45, perimenopausal, and NOT enjoying my hormones! From what I have read, this syndrome is most common, but not limited to, middle aged women, and it can come and go (which mine does, thank God!) or can linger for years. There is no real known cause, and no known cure, of course. But, it IS nice to know you are not alone, or going mad. Suggestions on the various sites I reviewed were it could be a lack of iron, lack of vitamins, come from acid reflux and of course, stress makes it worse. There were other possibilities, and they say everyone is different. Some people visited oral surgeons, some their primary care physician. Some tried to tame the burn with home remedies, some were put on anti anxiety meds, some on prescription medication . . . . . I say do as much research as you can, take a look at your lifestyle, and where the possible causes may come from, and what ever you do, stay away from hot sauce!
    just breathe . . .

I also have this condition. My tongue burns and my mouth tastes metallic and salty. After researching this condition and learning that it may be caused by a decrease in estrogen during menophause, I started the herbs maca and New Chapter Estrotone. As long as I take these estrogen supporting herbs along with bioidentical progesterone, this condition stays minimal. As soon as I run out or stop taking the herbs, it comes back in force.

Sinus conditions can cause odd tastes to occur as well. Sinus problems can also be due to hormones (there is something called "hormonal rhinitis", if you google it you might find out more info..).

I had some odd mouth tastes and during perimenopause, also I believed I could smell cigarette smoke too! And I do not smoke nor am I around those who smoke. So my sense of smell was distorted and smell/taste is related and sometimes things tasted oddly too. I hope you find something that helps...

It could well be a sign for peri menopause, better visit your GYNE so that you can inform her about the changes in your condition. Ask for a thorough check up and give all info to her
