whats going on

Hi, I am 47 and am having extremely heavy bleeding. When it starts I have extremely bad cramps or a build up of pressure. My appendix ruptured several years ago and it feels like that. Then it feels like something bursts and blood just pours out. I am scheduled for an ultrasound and have a Dr.'s appointment. I am taking meds to stop the bleeding. Is this how menopause starts or is it something else ?
