It has been said that women who work out excessively can have irregular or non-existant periods. However, many women will just naturally have irregular periods most or part of their life. There are also some health problems which can cause irregular periods.

You should not be worried or ashamed to tell someone that you are having a problem with your period. It is a very natural and normal thing to talk about. The worst thing you can do is keep possible problems to yourself which could potentially make you very sick or prevent you from having children in the future.

If you are too embarrassed to talk to family, your school nurse will talk to you. You can also see if there is a company called "Planned Parenthood" in your state (if you are in the US) and they will help you out without having to have your parents around. They can give you a free exam to make sure everything is ok. In the long run, it's probably best if you can tell a family member though.
