Hello. I am 28 years old. I started my period when I was about 13 and from 13 to about 26 everything was pretty cut-n-dry. I knew exactly when my period was coming, etc.
Then somewhere around mid 26, my period ceased. I thouhgt I was pregnant. My doctor confirmed that I wasnt. I had gained a lot of weight, so the doctors said it could be the weight gain and stress. She gave me orders to loose weight and take provera which was supposed to help me produce a normal cycle again. It worked. I took the prescription and my period came. but then the next month, my period did not come. I again went to the doctor, same thing...another prescription for provera. It worked again. But then the next month...and the same thing. This time I became discouraged and afraid of dependency on provera to obtain a cycle, I shyed away from the doctor, thinking that mabey it will just return to normal. So I went almost a year with no period. By this time me and my fiance was ready to start having children. I went to the doctor to see what was the problem, hince: no period = no pregnancy. She ran all kinds of tests; blood work, thyroid, ovulation, and agian provera. None of my test were bad, I was reproductively healthy, and the provera still was producing a period. The last time I have been to the doctor was in August 2006. I have not had a period. But then in October 2006, after I had intercourse I started bleeding. I thought..Finally!! a period. it lasted for 3 days and then it stopped. All throught the rest of October and November after I would have intercourse, I would bleed and stop. Then in December 2006, I noticed that not only was I bleeding (very heavy at this point), but I was also passing large blood clots. everytime I would go to the bathroom, it would be blood clots. This went on for about 3 days..bleeding and clotting all day long. It is now December 7th(my birthday I may add) and the bleeding and clotting has stopped, but now Im at a lost for words. I have a doctor's appt on December 26, but I just need advice beforehand.
There is usually some underlying factor which causes extended absence of periods whether it be cysts or hormonal imbalances, but if you were tested multiple times and everything was normal then I am at a loss as well.
During sex, your body experiences a fluctuation in hormones which can trigger cycles in some women. It may have been giving you just the spike you needed to start your cycle. That is essentially what the provera does. Time may be changing your hormone levels and causing your body to be more reactive to the hormone fluctuations during sex. You may also be on the verge of beginning normal cycles again, but it's hard to know for sure.
During the bleeding, you are not actually discharging blood clots, but the tissue from your uterine wall which is shed during menstrual cycles. Hormone levels will determine how thick your uterine wall is before it is shed. The thicker the lining, the more clumps of tissue you will see during a period. So with the changes you are seeing, I think it's a safe bet that your hormones are changing. Hopefully and most likely for the better.
Hope this helps. Also, it never hurts to get a second and third opinion about things. Doctors are not always right.
