I'm 16 years old and since I started 7th grade, my period has been really heavy and irregular. When I first started my period, when I was 12 and between my 6th and 7th grade year, a panty liner could hold all the blood released for my entire cycle, as unsterile as that is. Then towards the end of my 7th grade year, one day, all of a sudden I started experiencing large blood clots. I didn't know what to do. The overnight pads wouldn't hold the blood for even an hour. It went on for a week, like normal, and then I wouldn't have a period for the next 4 months. Then all of a sudden my period would start and once more be very heavy. It's been doing this since then, and now being a sophomore in high school, it is still happening, but not as horribly bad. I didn't have a period the entire summer between my freshman and sophomore year and then about a month and a half into school (school started August 11th), my period started again. I couldn't walk or anything without the feeling of me peeing on myself occuring all day. It was ruining my life. I can't laugh, walk fast, or even breathe normal without (as disgusting as this may be) blood shooting out everywhere. But the thing is sometimes it isn't heavy, it is normal, and sometimes it is unbarably heavy. Sometimes I'll be off my period for a week and then it will start again, and then sometimes I won't have a period for several months. I don't know what to do. It's getting absolutley rediculous. Does anyone have any advice for me? Please help and reply ASAP.

Oh, it is so hard when period problems start to run your life like that. Your body is bleeding a lot and I wouldnt be surprised if you are exhausted afterwards. I would be making sure that your diet is really good, lots of fresh fruit and veg and also eating meat (good quality) will be very beneficial to help build up the blood again. Western medicine will not be able to give you an answer for what is happening, or if they can they will only be giving you drugs/hormones to cover it all up. Go to a Chinese Doctor who specialises in gynecology/fertility. this will be the best thing you have ever done! and make sure you rest as much as possible during that heavy bleeding time.

I think sometimes it just happens as your hormones change while you are growing up. My periods started to get insane around the beginning of highschool. A heavy tampon and a heavy pad would be soaked within 30mins and I had to leave school several times. I went on birth control pills a year later and problem solved. Birth control pills stop the lining in the uterus from building up so there is less blood and no giant lumps to come out and they make it so you have your period the same time every month.
Talk to your parents about getting an appointment with a doctor or stop by a planned parenthood clinic and ask to speak to someone. They will make sure there are no health issues causing your problems and help you find ways to deal with or treat it. |

I recommend against going on a hormonal pill for health reasons, but if you did, it would certainly make your periods lighter and more regular. Maybe talk with a gyno to find one that has the least possible amount of hormones in it.
Also, maybe wearing a heavy tampon as well as a heavy pad might put you more at ease during those heavy flows. I definitely hear ya when you say it's making everyday life very difficult!

I'll take any risks of birth control pills gladly and personally I will never again try any pill that is supposedly safer because they just ended up causing more side effects even if the side effects are considered less risky. I bled for 2 weeks every month when I first tried ortho tricyclen lo and then spotted for months straight recently on lybrel before going back to yasmin. Yasmin made highschool survivable by controlling my periods, getting rid of acne and dandruff, and it's worth it just to not have to use condoms and worry. I've been on pills for years, off pills for years, and tried an IUD. I'll take pills and have been considering staying on hormonal birth control of some type even after my husband gets a vasectomy just for the benefits I've gotten. You have to talk to a doctor about your particular risk and make the decision for yourself.

I understand your pain and feel your frustration. I'm almost 23 and have been going through a similar situation since I was 16. I started menstruating when I was 14 but I had about 3 or 4 periods in two years. Then, all of a sudden, boom, I'm bleeding for weeks a time or not menstruating for months at a time. I remember bleeding for 47 days once before my parents finally put me birth control pills. B.C. can be an issue in and of itself because they do have side effects, some worse than others, but at your age this is probably your best bet. It'll definitely regulate your cycles, reduce the severity of pain, and lessen the heaviness of your bleeding. However, it is a trial and error process finding the right pill for your body. Good luck!

I started to have irregular period during my sophmore year in high school and now I'm on my sophmore year in college. I usually get my periods 2-3 times a year. My mom dragged me to go to the doctors because I still haven't gotten my period. I went to the doctors beginning of this year and said it is normal for teens to have irregular period. My mom was freaking out so she wanted me to take birth control pills just for the hormones. After the first pack of the pills I started to get periods like yours. Really heavy, large blood clots, huge cramps and that feel of peeing your pants. I had to change my pads like 7 times / day. UGH so uncomfortable. I stopped taking the pills because I just don't care. I mean you don't have to deal with the blood, moodswings, craving, bloating, cramps and waste money on the pads.
