Question Can too much Synthroid stop your period

My period stopped for about 7 month and I thought it was menopause then after being on synthriod for about a year my period came back like normal for years..

My doctor told me I was taking too much synthroid and to take one less pill a week and I didn't listen for fear of weight gain, then my period stopped... So I started doing as told and now after a year without a period they are back like normal. Doctor said my levels are good now also.

No one seems to be able to tell me if it was my hormone levels/synthroid that stopped my period or menopause.

    Any thoughts

I didn't listen for fear of weight gain,
It actually does the opposite, too little thyroid hormone can cause weight gain. Adding synthroid helps with increasing thyroid hormone levels which will decrease the risk of weight gain. Thyroid dysfunctions can have an effect on menstrual cycles, therefore having the synthroid to boost the thyriod will help your body balance out your periods. I think your thyriod levels were the cause for no period, because as soon as you increased those levels your period was back just as it should be.

I would recommend that you do not ignore your doctor's words though, choosing not to take a medication can have worse effects than taking it in the first place.

I think you misunderstood her itsasecret.. she said she didnt decrease her synthroid for fear of weight gain.

I'm 23, always had regular periods. They suddenly stopped last May. Still hadnt appeared by August. Had gained loads of weight also. Got my thyroid checked and it turned out to be underactive. Was told this was why my periods stopped.

    Thyroid problems cause menstrual irregularities.
Usually it is hyperthyroidism that causes amenorrhea (lack of periods) and hypothyroidism commonly causes menorrhagia (long heavy periods) but as was in my case it can also cause amenorrhea. Was very sudden for me aswell.

Obviously I can't tell you what exactly happened with you. Maybe hypothyroidism caused your periods to stop in the very beginning. Meds brought it back by regulating your hormones. Over the years maybe you needed less thyroid hormone and eventually became slightly hyperthyroid by taking too high a dose which would have caused your periods to stop. Then when you started taking the correct dose for yourself at that time it again regulated your hormones bringing your period back one again.

If you have Hashimotos like most people who are hypo maybe you were just going through an unstable period throwing your hormones off.

Sorry I cant help more, just a few thoughts. At least things are good now

Okay so I have thyroid cancer(4yr post thyroidectomy) and I am in the medical field so I think I can clear this up for you

so here is the deal on Synthoid....

The more Synthroid you take the lower your TSH is, because Synthroid suppresses. So to much Synthroid can make you hypothyroid (TSH below 0.3)
    Hypothyroid = weight gain

Less Synthroid means higher TSH level because less is being suppressed. To little Synthroid can make you hyperthyroid (TSH above 3.0)
    Hyperthyroid = weight loss

    Now for the period stuff...
YES! Hypothyroid can jack up your period. When I even get a little low I start skipping every other period and if I dont address it then 6mo later is stops all together. The concern is that the TSH your body needs is not getting out to the rest of the body so that the body can do what it needs to do to function correctly. On top of that your period stopping all together increases your risk of cancer because the uterine lining is thickening and not sloughing off line it normally does on a monthly basis.
Now heres the great news....Hyperthyroid can mess up your periods as well (eyeroll) so labs have to be done to figure out which it is.

    recommendation:
DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SAYS! not blindly but listen and ask questions. He told you to lower your dose because it is to high and effecting your period. On top of that there are a million other reasons why you DONT want to be hypothyroid (on to much synthroid)

*An increased appetite, along with weight loss
*Feeling hot all the time and increased sweating
    *Fever
    *Hyperactivity, nervousness, anxiety, or irritability
    *Insomnia
    *Emotional changes
    *Shakiness or muscle weakness
    *Heart palpitations
    *High blood pressure (hypertension)
    *A rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
*Heart failure, chest pain, or a heart attack
    *Difficult or painful breathing
*Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps (stomach cramps)
    *Hair loss
    *Flushing
*Broken bones or other signs of weakened bones
    *Menstrual problems or fertility problems
    *Seizures.
(ALL ABOVE ARE RIGHT FROM THE SYNTHROID INFORMATION SHEET!)

Good luck! listen to your doctor!

It could have been either the synthroid or hormones that stopped your period...too much synthroid will stop a period, and too much estrogen should stop a period...progestin (progesterone) will create a period; bring it on and estrogen (estradiol) will lessen it. Synthroid; depending on my hormones has actually brought on a period...and then when I wasn't ovulating synthroid at that time corrected my cycle. Depends where you are with your hormones progesterone (progestin) and estrogen (estradiol).
