Go a month without using tampons and see if you get any pain. If you don't then maybe tampons aren't for you. Also, you really shouldn't use a tampon for a heavy flow if you are on a normal or light day and you most definitely should not use a tampon if you are only spotting. Without the menses to soak up the tampon is dry and may well hurt on removal AND, far more seriously, may leave behind a small mote of cotton that could start an infection which could get very serious very quickly. Please do an internet search on 'tampon toxic shock syndrome'.
When you are spotting use only a panty liner.
On the lightening or your period - well, that can happen. Your period will change throughout your life. When I was in my 20s I had one or two days of light to average flow and then 2 days of spotting (during which time there may or may not have been another few hours of light to regular flow). I don't recall much about my period in my teens other than it was way lighter than what my poor sister suffered and didn't hurt at all. Now I'm heading into my late 30s and have had a child it is completely different again.
On the unprotected sex side of things - eek! It really isn't safe to assume because there is an issue with male fertility in his family that he will also have fertility issues. You've been together for a year and not got pregnant - I think that's enough chancing it. Use contraception at all times unless you want to have a baby.
By the way - if you are at all worried this period change could be due to pregnancy and that you are in fact bleeding despite being pregnant then just take a quick test to confirm you are not pregnant.
