I got my period around Tuesday of last week though I had no symptoms of PMS, besides a few pimples, that I'm used to getting. However, I'm also used to my period getting quite heavy by the second day and calming down till about the fourth where it starts to end. This time I had no cramps and it's only been light brown with a little blood and is still going on. I did have unprotected sex about two weeks ago, but I have no other symptoms of early pregnancy. My stress levels are pretty normal and healthy as are my diet and exercise habits. Long story short, I can't figure out what the heck is going on. Any suggestions/ advice is most welcome.
Hi gn63029,
There are different types of irregular bleeding, and thus, different causes for each. Keep close track of what you are witnessing, maybe you can find out which of these three it is (some are serious, others clearly not dangerous and fully harmless). Try to find out which is the one you’ve observed. (Note: Intake of the birth control pill as well as intrauterine devices (IUD) may lead to intracyclic bleeding and spotting.)
1. Irregular mentrual bleeding: irregular and intracyclic menstrual bleeding should be taken seriously, possible reasons could be: inflammation or excrescence (i.e. myomas). In this case you should definitely consult your gynecologist!
2. Intracyclic/mid-cycle menstrual bleeding (also: breakthrough bleeding):
Some women witness mid-cycle bleeding during ovulation. (see menstruation cycle summary below for further accurate info).
3. Menstrual spotting:
Spottings occurring either shortly before or after your period mostly appear due to a temporary disturbance of the hormonal balance, and are then harmless.
Menstrual cycle (course summary):
You get your menstruation in a period of between 28 to 35 days. One week (mutable) bleeding, two weeks later is your ovulation. During ovulation your body prepares for conception and you should be careful about having unprotected sexual intercourse the whole week before (male sperm can survive a couple of days), especially one day before and after the exact point of ovulation, as this is the most fertile point of your whole entire cycle (fertility during ovulation can vary between 7-16 hours). Two weeks after ovulation you get your menstruation again, a new cycle starts.
This is all I know. Hope I could help you =)
