Unhappy My Periods Are Getting Farther Apart

Hello! I am now to this forum, and was wondering if anyone here could help me. My periods have always been mildly irregular, but as of yet they have been getting farther and farther apart.

Ill start at the beginning so I can give you as much information as possible. I am 22 years old. I was not sexually active until I was 20, and I have only had (and still have) the same sexualpartner for the last 2 years. I started the pill in August of 2008 and was on them until December 2009. I stopped my birth control pills because my fiance and I had decided that we wanted to try for a baby. So I went all of January without the pill or any protection. My period came in the middle of January and was completely normal. 5 days and it was over. Well , we actually did concieve a baby. But I had what I thought was my period come back on the 17th of Feb. I took a pregnancy test because I had told my mom that I was having light bleeding again, and she suggested that I take a test, just to be sure. It came back positive, and I had all my blood work done, and follow blood work done, and thats when I was told that I had a miscarriage. My fiance and I were devestated. That was mid February.

Well come March 13, I had a normal period. April 14th was my next one. So that cycle length was 32 days. My next period I didnt get until May 27th, which made that cycle length 43 days long. And my last period I didnt get until July 17th, which made that cycle lenghth 53 days. So that makes my average cycle length from March to July like 42 days.

I went to my OB/GYN expressing my concern with the fact that my periods are getting farther apart, and its very frustrating because my fiance and I are still trying to get pregnant. So she ran tests to check my Prolactin, LH and FSH levels. I got a call back (with a message) today and her nurse said "we got your lab work back, annnd everythings normal. If you have any questions, give us a call." So now I am at a complete loss, and dont know what to do. To me it kind of sounds like they dont care. Like "we did our tests and dont know whats wrong with you, you're on your own."

I want to know if anyone else has had this problem with their periods, and what you did about it. I do not want to go back on the pill because I want to get pregnant. I know there are hormones that I could go on that could regulate my period, but I dont know if they are harmful, because I have no reason (hormone wise) to be on them. I just want to get everything in order so I can have a baby. How long should I wait until I see a specialist? We've been trying for almost 8 months now with no success. I've read that after a year of trying is when you should consider seeing a specialist. Is that true?

Thank you SO much for taking your time to read this and respond.

    Default ditto :(

I had gone a few years without having a period and my gyn told me it was nothing serious, that it is not necessary to have one... My periods had marched out, farther and farther apart until it just didn't come back. I started having other issues, particularly a significant decline in libido, which was upsetting to both my husband and me.

I asked my primary care physician for answers since the gyn was dismissive, but he said it was just stress and he too was dismissive. I was so upset I sought support from a psychologist... she suggested I see an endocrinologist.

That is how I finally found out why my periods were off, among other things... I was diagnosed with PCOS. Ever since, I have been on metformin which I was told would help promote ovulation since we are TTC. Since being off BCP and on metformin, by periods have started to march out again... 26 days... 28 days... 30 days... 31 days... 34 days... I am currently on day 36 with a negative preg test again.

It is heartbreaking to go through the hopefulness each month when I realize my period is "late" just to be disappointed when the preg test is neg :/
