Abnormal Period Clot.

Hi Everyone

This is a little worrying as I have not experienced this before. I've had my period VERY heavy for the last days which is very abnormal for me, as I'm more regular flow and barely any clots. I've actually woken up twice in the last few days and had blood on the sheets and been a mess, even with tampon and pad!

I was just sitting here at work and felt something pushing down like my tampon was slipping out so I quickly ran to the bathroom and a disgustingly huge clot came out. It was literally the size of the palm of my hand, was really gross. I had absolutely felt no cramping over the last few days, but ever since going to the bathroom I'm aching and have cramping.

I'm a little bit freaked out at the moment! Does this happen normally with other women? (I'm sure it does!?)

If this hasn't happened to me before, should I be seeing my doctor?

Little background which might help: Doctors believe I have PCOS, and also believe I have miscarried numerous times, but my periods have always been irregular, although never heavy like this.

The first thing that came to mind was a miscarriage, but I've never heard of blood clots being that big. I think every woman has them, but I don't know the "normal size" I guess. I would still see your doctor, to just make sure that everything is okay. Are you trying to conceive? Otherwise, maybe they can put you on some sort of birth control to help regulate things a bit and hopefully prevent any future miscarriages (that is if you're not trying to conceive)

Often a clot will begin as a huge entire clump inside the uterus and breakdown into smaller parts every once and awhile, which is why many women do not experience it as one large drop. The worry should start if these clots remain that large for a long period of time. If it is only once and never again then it can likely be attributed to a different period (as each period no matter the woman will always differ in slight ways). If these very large clots continue then yes you should consult your doctor. Birth control is also a good idea if this bleeding continues with your future periods so that it can regulate everything.
