bleeding between periods, abdominal pain

I am 32, have 2 children and am not on any hormonal form of BC.
For the last few months I have had almost constant period pains, ranging from mild to severe and odd bleeding in between.
About a year ago my periods started lasting about 2 weeks, 5-6 days of heavy bleeding then nothing for 2 days, then started again for about another 5 or 6 days. I don't know if this would be classed as spotting but it would generally start again after I had sex.
Now for the last few months my periods have been about 6 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on again. Then on about day 12 i get this pink heavy discharge that lasts for about a week. And then a couple of heavy one off bleeds at about days 22 to 26. My cycle is about 30-31 days.
I've noticed today for the first time (I've had a heavy bleed at day 26) that it has a really strong iron smell, like fresh blood as opposed to period blood.
I'm waiting for an ultrasound scan but in the meantime am driving myself crazy with thinking about what it might be.
Anyone suffered the same or have any advice?

I am also 32. The only difference between our stories is:
it just started happening to me since July. And the other difference is I am having a watery/yellowish/stinky discharge in between the bleeding. My bleeding is light and watery, ranging from pink to bright red. It is random, doesnt have much of a pattern lke a period. For example, one month I bled for 4 days, spotted a dew days, lightly bled for a few days. Sporadic. And then the discharge in between.

p.s. Wanted to ask you, do you ever have small clots?

Hi Katie, thanks for your reply. I do sometimes have small clots but not with these new episodes. If anything its lighter in consistency, as in thinner, like fresh blood.
I have an ultrasound scan booked for tomorrow (weather permitting!!) I'll post an update if I find out anything
