I'm 18 and have had my period for three years you could say but It's been incredibly irregular. I could go months without have a period (not that I'm complaining about that). But my Dr said I should have my period again because it's not healthy to have it. I have gone so long without have a period I can easily go eight months without a period although there have been a little spotting in between. Although I've had my period for three years, I've barely had any. Because my periods are so far apart I don't keep track that well of them. I not even sure how many periods I've had.
Since January I've been put on the birth control pill to start my periods again. The first one started just fine I had a normal period, the second one I can quite remember. The thrid one I missed a pill and ended up getting late on them and starting spotting through the whole period (I'm not sexually active), I had the spotting start early but I never really got a period only spotting instead. This month I was trying to be very careful about when I took my pills so I wouldn't mess up my period this month. I took each fairly close to the same time for 28 days. When I was due for my period it was later then usual and it was just spotting. Not a real period(but yet there was painful cramps), which I should have had with the birth control.
I've had so few real periods because I was "a late bloomer" only getting my period at 15. I would go 6 months without a period and have some spotting in between. Now I'm getting concerned about not having two months in a row where I should have one because I'm on birth control. it's just been spotting, the spotting lasts about a week. I've had it before I started birth control. They are trying to regulate my period and now I'm getting worried that something might be really wrong with me only have very few periods. I'm hoping someone could have help me out with this situation. My Dr said it was quote unhealthy to go without a period for so long.
It may be that the birth control pills aren't quite working for you... you might need to switch to a different kind. I'd call and talk to your doctor about it.
While having a period every 28ish days is ideal... everything I've read and heard from my doctor seems to say you should have them within 90 days of each other. After that point it does increase the risk of getting uterine cancer later in life.
