Im 42 and have had my period for 8 months straight (4 days of stopping on 2 occasions) I was put on the oral pill back in January 2010 after seeing the Dr because of very heavy bleeding, 2 months later couldnt walk due to a DVT (clot) in my leg, I havnt been on the pill for 13 years due to having tubes tied. Realising the pill was not for me and still got bleeding i visited a women health clinic, pap smear ruled out infection and opted for IUD implant (mirena) this was a simple 5 minute procedure that i thought ok 3 months for hormone to take effect, after 6 weeks no change, heavy period continued, i went back for 6 week check up and was put on hormone tablets, started off at 1 tablet a day, then 2 weeks later 2 tablets a day till eventually 4 tablets a day, revisited Dr and now feeling like a walrus with 7kg of weight (bleeding subsided greatly) but was still bleeding, came off tablets and said to Dr i want a hysterectomy , she gladly said yep and wrote referal to Specialist, ok firstly we will do Ultra sound check for fibroids and cysts , returned to Dr a few days later to find bilateral cysts (small in nature) 1 fibroid (small in nature) also found Left ovary enlarged with 27cc of fluid, hmmm (thinks is this serious) nothing to worry about she said, letter in hand for hysterectomy, i head home to call the number to make a booking to see Specialist, called and was greeted by receptionist and was told my Dr rang to make a recommendation for the earliest appointment available (which was 4 weeks time) one starts thinking why the Dr did this ??? 3 weeks to go and im at the specialist, hoping all this will be over and a new year and a new me is just around the corner

I thought I was the only person in the country with this problem...and apparently I'm not. Glad I have something to read from women who are/have gone through what I'm going through. Ok, heres my story, I'm overweight, yes, I think I may have PCOS, I haven't gotten pregnant(not from lack of trying), and its EXTREMELY hard for me to loose weight. I just got insurance with my job, and haven't had a chance to make the dr. appointment yet, but, this forum is my pushing point. I've had a period for about a month now, and it's getting on my nerves!!! I know that periods are supposed to be lovely things, the reason why women are women, blah, blah, blah, but i feel like I'm bleeding to death!!! I don't feel confident anymore, I'm buying pads(I hate tampons) every week in hopes that this will soon stop, and praying that it will! But, alas it has not, so every opportunity I have I'm googling things to see if I can find ANYTHING new. I'm happy I came across this forum because now I will have questions to ask my dr when I get there. Like INSISTING on an ultrasound..Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. P

Ladies, Go to the library and find a copy (they may have it on film) of More magazine, Dec 2008 issue. There is a must read article about women's health care and doctors knowledge and procdures and care they may not do or even know about. Many doctors are simply too busy to keep up with changes, they tend to do what they know - whether its really what may be best for you. You have to educate yourself.

The US does more hysterectomies than the rest of the world combined! Educate your self, get a second or even third opinion, talk to other women and find out what has worked for them. I had constant bleeding - stress my doctor thought, tried drugs, they were a disaster. I researched, questioned and had a D&C with an ablation. It was an excellent solution for me. May not be for you. Take the time, make the effort, dig in and research. But first read that article. It's a real eye opener!

Ok, I am 22 and have had the same problem since the beginning of November. I have been reading all of these posts and I am so glad I found other peopole going through this. Yesterday I stumbled upon a couple pages with some interesting info I think I'm going to try it. Apparently vitamin b6 could help and one says about vitamin k deficiency being a major reason women bleed heavily through a period. Also how people on anticoagulants have symptoms of Menorrhagia. Anyways, here are the pages, let me know what you guys think. I just figured I would share what I found because it was the first useful thing I have read online about this problem and I noticed alot of you guys saying doctors didn't know why.

Ok, so I don't know...maybe the vitamin b6 worked. I have been taking one vitamin b6 since 11-30...I am sooo thrilled. My period finally stopped. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it, either, but I also tried to stay away from meat and dairy (too hard to do so completely though...lol) Okk well ikd, I hope it works for you guys...and mine had better not come back! lol now I'm crossing my fingers. But seriously, I hope someone out there finds some sort of use out of those links and they help...

Thumbs up I'm joining the group!

Hey, everyone. I realize this thread is over three years long, however, I'm joining in on the large amount of women and girls who have really long and really ANNOYING periods!

My name is Kat and I'm a 22 year old female. I've had irregular periods my entire life, but ones that were normally far and few between. For the past year or so I've been getting periods that last about 10-14 days long. They're annoying as anything, however, they start off very light and stay light. After about 8 days they will get heavy and then it'll just stop after a few days of heavy bleeding. Kind of like my body is having a hard time getting rid of the gunk and stuff.

    HOWEVER----

Back in November 2010 I got my period and it started off very light. Unfortunately, it STAYED light and would not get heavy at all. Finally, after having this extremely light period for about a month and a half, I get it really heavy. It's been heavy since last Tuesday (today marking the 10th day of it being heavy). This means that I will have my period for almost two months come the middle point of January. Lots of blood clots now that I have my period very heavy. When it was light, I didn't even need to wear any pads or anything....it was THAT light; barely anything.

I've been really concerned about this until I searched online and came to this thread. This thread has made me feel SO much better about my condition! I've made the decision to wait off on going to the doctor's office because I almost know that they will more than likely throw birth controls at me and I'm one of those green 'gals who doesn't like to take any form of medication. I am, though, taking a multivitamin and just started that yesterday.

I do not really know why I'm (and all of the other girls on this forum) getting two month long periods. I was afraid I was going to bleed to death, but apparently it's more common than I thought! By the way, absolutely no pain whatsoever. Nothing. No cramps at all. Just really heavy bleeding. Besides the fact that I have absolutely no sex life with my fiance who I'm getting married to in a few months, it's not painful or really that horrible to have. Hopefully the multivitamin will sort things out. I just wanted to come on and say thanks to everyone on here because I feel a lot better about my condition and I'm sorry again for resurfacing a post that is three years old!

---hoping that this demon of a period ends soon........

Unhappy I thought I was alone!!!

I am 18 years old going on 19 in april. I have had irregulary periods since my first one when i was 13. I use to rarely have them but after I start the depo shot at 16 They wont go away. I Was on my period for 9 months straight with a 4 day break some where in the 9 months. I stopped getting the depo and i havent had such a long once since but i still have them really long. I I am currently on my period and have been on it since about december 12th! it's super heavy and i have clots, Im so irritated with it! Im afraid of what could be wronge because I havent had a pap smear ever because im always on my period! once I get off and make an appointment its back! like it doesnt want me to have one! Im a medical student and know there are endless possibilities to what could be wronge and most of them arent too good. I want kids someday but if its someting drastic that might not hapen! I wish i could just figure it out so I can relax and not stress about it so much..

It's comforting to see that other people have this problem, too. I've never been on any kind of birth control. I'm 20, have had my period since I was 13. I am overweight, trying to lose it, but it's not easy. My periods are 3 months long, sometimes longer. And they will change pace everyday. Sometimes they'll stop for a few days, but it always comes back. There are times it is so heavy I soak a overnight pad in 30 minutes. With giant clots. It's getting to where I can't function normally. I am a CNA, and I can hardly work when it gets bad b/c everytime I lift, I have a clot the size of a quarter ATLEAST. My husband and I try to make the best of our sex life, but it's nearly impossible when you bleed this much. I want to have children pretty soon and I really don't know what to do. If I need to go on birth control for a year to regulate, I will do it, but will that work?

this thread is a little reassuring and depressing at the same time. its great to know im not alone, but it sucks that no one has gotten any real answers i am 20 almost 21 i have been bleeding heavy for 48 days now, not including the 12 days i spotted before hand. i have always had irregular periods, including periods that lasted a month, but never this long, i finally went to the doctors last wed, and have an ultrasound tomorrow, but im scared that they are not going to give me any answer as to why i am bleeding.
